Following the castingof Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, director Joss Whedon has announced that he will be recruiting fellow How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris to play the newly revealed villain in The Avengers: Dr. Horrible! Whedon says that he wanted to bring the character into the Marvel Universe ever since his debut in the popular 2008 webseries Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog. The announcement also included the first official poster (above) for the film as well as the official synopsis (below):
When the Evil League of Evil, a new terrorist group led by the nefarious Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris), threatens to take over the world, it is up to S.H.I.E.L.D. to assemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to stop them. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) join forces under the watchful eye of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). But will the heroes be able to put aside their own differences in time to save the day? (Source: AvengersMovie.com)
Whedon has also confirmed that The Avengers will be a musical, just like Dr. Horrible, and rumor has it that the director will once again turn to his brother Jed Whedon to help him compose the score. Downey Jr. stated in an exclusive interview that he “couldn’t be more excited to show off his voice” and that he was especially looking forward to his duet with Jackson.
