We’ve already had character posters covering supporting hero Iron Patriot (Don Cheadle) and supporting villain Adrian Killich (Guy Pearce), not to mention our eponymous hero (Robert Downey, Jr.). Now it’s time for our first full look at Iron Man 3‘s big bad, The Mandarin, played by Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley.
Though The Mandarin definitely does have an Oriental vibe going, as with his comic book counterpart – unavoidable given the name -, the tinted shades and his combat trousers definitely suggest a more eclectic approach to Tony Stark’s nemesis. The American combat helmet with a bullet hole suggests that The Mandarin is no friend of the US, as you might expect; might Iron Man 3 subtly reflect the first film’s neo-colonial undertones?
The film is out on April 26th in the UK and May 3rd in the US. Based on the trailers we’ve seen so far, not to mention rumors of having been inspired by the comics’ brutal Extremis storyline, Tony Stark is in for some hard times.
