In the life of every superhero there comes a time when they ask the question: is it all worth it? All the blood, the death, the disappointment – are these things I’m willing to let into my life anymore?
Usually this existential angst arrives after the superhero is out of ankle socks and of its own accord, as opposed to being driven into them by their legal guardian; then again, Mindy Macready AKA Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) isn’t your usual superhero.
Kick-Ass may have focused on the trials and tribulations of ordinary guy Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) – his mother’s death, his failure to get a girlfriend – but it was the borderline psychopathic Hit-Girl and the Adam West-apeing Damon Macready/Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage) who brought most of the laughs.
The film’s watershed moment arguably came in having a 13 year-old girl refer to a bunch of mobsters as “c**ts”. Oh, brave new world.
In any case, this new trailer for the sequel follows Mindy Macready as she struggles to settle into an ordinary life, swapping her Samurai swords for pompoms. As you might guess, the transition doesn’t go all that smoothly.
WARNING: RED BAND
“I don’t need to spend the next four years of my life trying to figure out who I am. ‘Cause I already know: I’m Hit-Girl.”
Kick-Ass 2 is directed by Jeff Whadlow and stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Jim Carrey. It’s due out in the UK on July 19th.
