With all the recent talk of the ‘stand alone’ Star Wars movies, much of the speculation and interest has been on original trilogy characters such as the galaxies best-dressed bounty hunter Boba Fett and the Corellian smuggler himself, Han Solo. But what of the prequel trilogy and extended universe? Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated television series have added an array of exceptional characters who would all be outstanding central protagonists in their own movie. They range from the heroic, with Jedis Saesee Tiin, Kit Fisto, Plo Koon and Aayla Secura, to the villainous Savage Opress and Mother Talzin’s Nightsisters. Lets run through the top 5 characters that surely deserve their own Star Wars spin-off.
5. Darth Maul
To those who don’t know Star Wars extended universe lore or watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars show, Darth Maul, the double-lightsaber brandishing original apprentice of Darth Sidious, did not die at the end of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (spoilers people, he was sliced in twain by the sharp end of Obi Wan’s lightsaber). This film could thus concentrate on Maul’s post-Episode I days featuring him with the addition of his cybernetic bottom half. Alternatively, it could act as a prequel of sorts telling the tale of Maul’s fall to the dark side and how he got those snazzy facial tattoos!
4. Asajj Ventress
This Dark Jedi can hold her own against anyone else who wields a lightsaber in the Star Wars universe. Originally designed to be an antagonist in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones but never used, Ventress was first seen on screen in Genndy Tatakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars show (not to be confused with the more recent CGI series Star Wars: The Clone Wars) which was aired in 2003. She has it all; an awesome look, conflicted past and formidable fighting skills. Asajj Ventress is not a woman to be trifled with.
3. Clone/Storm Troopers
Bear with me here; how cool would it be to have a grunt-level war film starring ground troops? They’ve done this to a lesser extent during Star Wars: The Clone Wars in the episodes that focus purely on the trials and tribulations of the clones rather than the more dashing and courageous Jedi. C’mon, just imagine Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now or Oliver Stone’s Platoon remade in Star Wars universe, for instance, and tell me that in the right hands this wouldn’t be fantastic!
2. Mace Windu
Samuel L. Jackson’s Windu is everyone’s favourite bald, black, badass Jedi Master. Since the characters demise at the hands of Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the actor has always attested that he somehow survived. A movie concentrating on his heyday as the Jedi Council’s greatest warrior (rather than after the events of the third installment), however, is a far juicier prospect. Who wouldn’t want to see Mace Windu in his prime taking on all of the galaxies scum and villainy?
1. Aurra Sing
Although only seen fleetingly in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace during the podrace scene, Sing captured the imagination of many. Looking remarkably mysterious with her ‘Fallan’ hyper-rifle draped over her back and long pony-tail, Sing has warranted an assortment of extended universe stories and has even become a firm addition in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars. A movie following the exploits of the bounty hunter and her many adventures would surely make for a rollicking, action-filled ride. With an anti-hero such as Aurra Sing as the focus, the movie would, no doubt, fit most snuggly in the vein of a Western, with the lawless Outer Rim territories as the Wild West. But just a word of warning guys; if you spot this lady in the Mos Eisley Cantina, approach at your own peril as there is a good chance you may just lose an arm (or worse)!
