Avengers 2… Now With Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch?

At yesterday’s Iron Man 3 premiere, Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon spoke to Yahoo news about the the process of working on the Avengers franchise. And in the process, he may have hinted at a surprising addition to the superhero team’s lineup:

When you’re dealing with the story, when you’ve got the characters that you love, when you’ve got the new characters sliding in next to them – it’s very exciting… Then I don’t feel pressure, then I feel like I’m reading my favorite comic. I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act, they’re in the movie. That’s exciting! You lock certain things in, there’s a fluidity.

Obviously when one thinks about a “brother-sister act” involved with the Avengers one duo immediately jumps to mind: Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Pietro and Wanda Maximoff are the children of the X-Men supervillain Magneto, and have been members of Marvel’s flagship superhero team for decades. Extremely popular amongst Marvel’s fanbase, the super-speedster and reality-warping witch could be a great addition to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (so long as they keep far, far away from the Ultimate Universe’s incest plot).

For years there has been speculation as to whether the film rights for these characters reside with Marvel Studios (due to their long-term Avengers associations) or with Fox (since the pair are mutants and first appeared in the X-Men comics). Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Fiege has said that the rights to the pair may be even more complicated: “If [Fox] wants to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could.” Should the Maximoffs appear in Avengers 2, that question would be answered once and for all, and it would be unlikely we would see the two in Fox’s X-Men franchise.

Then again, Whedon could have been referring to some other brother and sister pairing. But apart from the unlikely appearance of the Strucker siblings, who else could it be?

Do you think Whedon was talking about the Maxmioffs? Are you exciting to see them in Avengers 2? Let us know!
