Sources say that Zoe Saldana is currently in negotiations to portray the character of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently in prep. Saldana is not one to shy away from portraying strong female characters, as she has done so in Colombiana as well as the mega blockbuster Avatar.
Since this film is in the early stages of prep, all we know about the character so far is that she is the female lead. In the comics, Gamora is a green-skinned assassin who is also the adopted daughter of the super-villain Thanos. Although no story elements have been revealed, this could lead to the introduction of Thanos in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie as well as a proper introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would lead to him being the villain in Avengers 2.
If Saldana is cast she would be starring alongside Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty, Moneyball) who is playing Star-Lord and Dave Boutista (Riddick, The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption) who is portraying Drax the Destroyer. The other characters confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy are Rocket Raccoon and Groot, who have yet to have been cast.
You can catch Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura this summer in J.J. Abrams’ long-waited sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Guardians of the Galaxy is due in theaters August 1, 2014.
