Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Begins Viral Marketing Campaign

In the last few years, the advertising industry has undergone something of a revolution.

Nowadays it’s not enough to splash a poster up on a huge billboard or bombard the airwaves with mentions of your product, no: you have to make the advert itself something special. It’s because of this we now have viral marketing.

Case and point: Rising Tide, a new viral website for ABC’s upcoming TV series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Taking the form of a supposed conspiracy website, this clever piece of marketing has been building up hype around the show through providing unique in-universe content, such as photos of crime scenes related to S.H.I.E.L.D. operations.

ABC is by no means the first network to take this approach. The BBC did the same thing for the first season of the new Doctor Who through their own conspiracy website relating to pilot episode “Rose”.

Even so, we at AP2HYC will be keeping an eye on the Rising Tide website to try and figure out exactly how it relates to the character of Skye, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest techie.

To quote another famous TV conspiracy theorist, “The truth is out there”. With some luck, we’ll be bringing it to you soon.
