Who doesn’t love video games? The Australian government, apparently. And who doesn’t love superheroes? Well, at times I think that Hollywood doesn’t but that’s just me. And what happens when you combine these two awesome elements together? Most of the time… bad stuff. But sometimes, if you’ve been a very good fanboy/girl/furry Martian thing, then Father Christmas will say: “Here you go ya little weirdo! Here’s a kickass game for you.”
Yes, we all love a good superhero video game. Film and TV do their part but if there is one thing in this world that can make you feel like a real superhero, it’s a video game. Unless you do cosplay while high, but that never leads anywhere good as I discovered one bitter Halloween party many moons ago.
DISCLAIMER! The following games are presented in no particular order and are what I consider to be the top 10. You may feel differently. You may be right. You probably won’t be. Feel free to say so in the comments.
10. Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom
The latest in a long line of crossover games, UMvC has large shoes to fill. And it does so admirably. With fun, flashy gameplay and a wide roster of characters from both sides, this game will help you decide the ultimate question…who would win in a fight between Dante and Rocket Racoon?
And just because it feels good to say it… Phoenix Wright! You know what I’m talking about.
9. Saints Row IV
Just when you thought Saints Row couldn’t get any weirder… it does! When aliens invade and you are put into a Matrix-esque virtual reality, you have to fight back against the invaders with superpowers. Oh, the madness that ensues! With powers such as super speed, telekinesis, forcefields, fire blasts, frost rays and lightning bolts, Saints Row lets you be the kind of superhero you want to be… although that invariably means you end up f**king Steelport up!
8. City of Heroes
It’s a MMORPG…where you can create your own superhero. NEED I SAY MORE? Not only is the character customisation extensive but you can pick multiple powers, design your own costume and even create your own backstory! With not only a wide variety of missions and villains to fight, you can team up with others and bring down the bad guys with your friends. Paragon City welcomes you as you take to the streets to fight crime…your way!
7. Spider-Man 2
I know what you’re thinking. Movie tie in = bad game, right? Wrong. Well… wrong in this case at least. Simply put, this game makes you FEEL like Spider-Man. No other game has done this. Some have come close, but none can compare the amazing game play mechanic this game has! As you swing from building to building, timing your webs and swaying back and forth, it feels like web swinging should. It’s fun, it’s flowing, it’s fast and you can even swing from helicopters!
What else about the game.. .oh yeah, it’s narrated by BRUCE CAMPBELL! THAT ALONE SHOULD BE ENOUGH!
6. Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
This game surprised me when I first played it. I thought it’d just be me as the Hulk, smashing stuff up. Nothing special. Boy, was I wrong! Not only was the game fun to play, not only was the sandbox gameplay wide and full of variety… but the story is phenomenal. I mean it! It takes the characters from the original comics and presents them such a unique and clever way that… I’m just going to say two things. Neal McDonough as Bruce Banner and Ron Pearlman as Emil Blonsky a.k.a Abomination. I’ll let you find out the rest.
5. Prototype
Forget superheroes, sometimes it’s nice to be nasty! Well, morally ambiguous anyway. Yep, Alex Mercer loves to scarf down civvies as much as baddies but is that a bad thing? Let’s face it, we’ve all wanted to slice NPC’s in half and steal their face at one time or another, right? Oh, just me then? Apart from that, the main thing about Prototype is the fun gameplay. With plenty of flow and a large assortment of shape shifting superpowers, one thing is for certain…it’s good to be bad.
4. Infamous
Forget morally ambiguous, what about those of us who want to keep our options open? Yes, Infamous lets you pick your own path. Will you be a righteous hero of the people or a villainous champion of your own interests. Not only does this game draw you into an interesting new world of heroes and villains but also explores the super hero mythos, looking to understand what makes a hero…or breaks one. With a chubby sidekick at your side and a whole slew of electricity powers, it’s time your you to make some hard choices.
3. Injustice: Gods Among Us
Do I like DC? No. Do I like this game? Yes. That’s how good it is.
With a large roster of your favourite heroes and villains, Injustice comes from the good folks at NetherRealm, creators of Mortal Kombat. And man, does it show. The gameplay is fantastic and goes above and beyond simple fighting game mechanics. With each character having a unique feel and style of fighting, this game is perfect for any DC fan. Not to mention the story is well thought out and guaranteed to impress. Anything else I should mention? You can play as the Joker. Once again… THAT ALONE SHOULD BE ENOUGH!
2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Awww yeah! Ever wanted to make your favourite Marvel characters team up? Well now you can. With a roster of over twenty characters to choose from, you can make your own super hero dream team. Thor and Wolverine? No problem. Human Torch and Blade? Sure thing. Deadpool and Howard the Duck? Well… you can’t have everything. But make no mistake, this game is massive in scale. It explores the Marvel Universe with abandon. Your journey will take you from the nation of Latveria to the furthest reaches of the Shi’ar Empire. Let the crossover to end all crossovers commence!
1. Batman Arkham City
Again, hate DC. Again, love this game. Again… that good! If Spider-Man 2 let you feel like Spider-Man, then this game lets you feel like Batman in all his glory. And in a sandbox no less! Explore the dark world of Arkham City as you uncover a mysterious plot by mad scientist Hugo Strange. With all the gadgets you could want, the only thing you need are villains to use them against. Behold! There are more of Batman rouges gallery here than you can shake a batarang at. Penguin, Two-Face, Riddler and of course The Joker all make an appearance along with plenty of side characters. This isn’t just a Batman game. This is THE Batman game (At least until Batman Arkham Origins comes out).
What do YOU think of these games? Do you think they are worthy of a top 10 spot or are you the kind of person who thinks Superman 64 deserves a second chance? Comments. Write in them. Now. I COMMAND YOU!
