The great phenomenon of modern day cinema is comic book movies, with their global success now ensuring that around three films are released every year. It is the Marvel characters who dominate this landscape, with the vast majority of their titles becoming hits at the box office, including these five.

5. The Avengers – $1.51 billion

Overview – The Marvel ensemble film bringing together many of the biggest superheroes, in a battle against Loki (the brother of Thor).

4. Iron Man 3 – $1.21 billion

Overview – Tony Stark has to wage battle against a mysterious terrorist known as The Mandarin.

Stars – Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce

Facts – Most successful Iron Man film so far, both in the US ($68.9 million opening day) and worldwide.

 

3. Iron Man 2 – $623.9 million

Overview – With his double identity now public knowledge, Iron Man/Tony Stark is also faced with a crazed adversary linked to the legacy of his father.

Stars – Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke

Facts – Reached $194 million in box office grosses outside of the US, with the UK and Korea accounting for £23 million each of that total.

 

2. Iron Man – $585.2 million

Overview – Following his capture by terrorists and injuries, Tony Stark is driven to create his iron suit and defeat a dictator.

Stars – Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard

Facts – This was the highest grossing Marvel movie worldwide until the second instalment, making $312,433,331 in the US alone.

 

1. X-Men: The Last Stand – $457.1 million

Overview – The mutants split into rival X-Men and Brotherhood factions, following the discovery of a cure for their conditions.

Starring – Sir Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman

Facts – This instalment in the X-Men series shattered all previous box office records for both the franchise and films based on Marvel comic book characters, just nine days after its worldwide release.
