There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?
The Dark Side… and the Light.
The internet has awoken! Here is possibly the most highly anticipated trailer of all time in all its glory!
As teased by director J.J. Abrams, the trailer offers us a peek into the next instalment of perhaps the biggest franchise to be releasing a film next year (something we know a bit about). While at once both familiar and new, the trailer is just a tease, giving us a taste of what’s to come, but no real details – which is really the best we could hope for.
Noticeably absent from the trailer are any of the returning cast members – we see nothing of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, or Carrie Fisher. Well, not their faces anyways – I’m going to start the theory (although I’m sure someone has already beat me to it) that the cloaked figure we see with the cool red lightsaber is actually Hamill as Luke Skywalker following in his father’s footsteps with a turn to the Dark Side. It’s also very possible that Hamill is doing the voice-over – his long career as a voice actor means he could easily be disguising his voice.
We do get one blast from the past as the Millennium Falcon makes an appearance that had me cheering before I even knew it! For me, that was like seeing an old friend and I can’t wait to see it back in action!
Okay, so that’s the old stuff, what about the new stuff? We see a few glimpses of the new actors joining the series, including John Boyega as the Storm Trooper in the beginning, followed by Daisy Ridley, who’s rumoured to be Leia and Hans’ daughter, and Oscar Isaac piloting an X-Wing.
The fact that the Storm Troopers are still around after the defeat of the Empire is interesting, although we already knew they would be around. The little ball droid is cute, but again, reveals nothing. The return of the X-Wings was pretty sweet, but reveals nothing. The aforementioned cloaked figure is pretty badass, especially with the extra tiny blades on his lightsaber, but again, reveals nothing – DAMN YOU AND YOUR ACCURSED SECRECY J.J.!
So much for the visuals. There’s no dialogue aside from the voice-over, which again doesn’t give away much, although it’s interesting to note that the Force is returning on both sides, not just one (although really, it would have to, right?). The music is also pretty great, building to a nice crescendo to match the Falcon’s appearance.
All in all, a very exciting trailer, and certainly great fun, but in true J.J. style, it gives us very little in the way of story or even character details. Either way, I think we’ll all be watching it quite a bit for the next few days, just to make sure!
