Age of MCU: 6 Iron Man Suits We’d Like To See In Future MCU Films

You’ve heard the expression, “the clothes make the man”? In the case of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it should be “the iron suit makes the man.” One of the highlights of any Iron Man movie is seeing Tony dive into his armor and start kicking ass. Each movie, we’re introduced to a new suit that’s better than the last. Thousands of fans are going crazy over the fact that we’re finally seeing the Hulkbuster Armor make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While the Hulkbuster is indeed epic, there is much more in the Stark arsenal. Over the years, Tony has donned dozens of different suits, each designed to accommodate a special situation. We got a glimpse of some of these suits in Iron Man 3, but we deserve more. With such a wide future ahead of us, it’s very possible that we may see one or more of the following armors make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6. Space Armor Mark III

For a brief time, Iron Man joined forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The question is, how exactly could he travel through space to meet up with the Guardians? After several prototypes, Tony Stark perfected the Space Armor Mark III. This suit is powered by multiple repulsor cores like the one implanted in his chest, and it is equipped with a revolutionary AI system called P.E.P.P.E.R., which can take over control in case of emergencies. The most impressive feature is that Stark can control multiple suits on Earth while wearing this armor hundreds of light years away. So we can see Iron Man fighting alongside the Guardians in one film as his drones help the Avengers back on Earth. If we’re lucky, this armor could be a tiny bridge that leads to a crossover between the two teams.

5. Thorbuster Armor

You’ve heard of the Hulkbuster, but what do you know about the Thorbuster? Thor entrusted Tony Stark with an Asgardian crystal with the intention of using it to provide clean energy to Earth. Shortly afterwards, Asgard “moved” over Earth and caused disruptions on the planet. Stark goes to meet with the Asgardians, Thor shoos him off, and things get intense. Using the Asgardian crystal as a power source, Stark builds an armor designed off of the Destroyer and confronts the Norse God of Thunder once again. Thor wins the fight against the armor, but only because he was wielding the Odin-Force. The Thorbuster was able to stop Mjolnir in mid-flight, so if Thor was at his regular strength level, Stark might have won. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of the Thor films, but if I knew the Thorbuster was going to be showing up, then you might find me at the midnight premiere.

4. Heavy Duty Armor Mark I

It’s a shame we didn’t get more action with War Machine in the films, and I highly doubt that his suit will be showing up much in the future. As a compromise, I’d settle with an appearance by the Heavy Duty Mark I. Stark actually built this armor with the original intention of fighting the Hulk, but it wasn’t as polished as the Hulkbuster. Even if it doesn’t pack as hard a punch, this armor would be great to spot on screen. It’s armed with multiple miniguns on the arms and shoulders, and possesses a powerful forcefield generator that can repel up to a dozen enemies at once. This would be the ideal suit for large-scale battles with multiple soldiers converging on the Avengers. Send in the Heavy Duty Mark I to clear the road with the Hulk providing backup.

3. Stealth Armor

The film version of Iron Man has always been a hard-hitting, offense-is-the-best-defense kind of superhero. However, in Iron Man 3, we did catch a glimpse of Tony Stark’s resourcefulness as well as his sneaking abilities as he broke into the Mandarin’s compound. The Stealth Armor capitalizes on those qualities and takes the Avengers’ covert initiative to a whole new level. This armor was built when Stark had to sneak into a Columbian drug dealer’s estate while still remaining protected. The joints in the suit are spaced further apart to minimize sounds, the metal is embedded with special camouflaging abilities, and the weaponry is all designed to be quiet and stealthy. One of the coolest features of the suit is that it can conceal itself and make the wearer look like he or she is wearing normal clothing. I can picture a scene where a plain-clothes Stark is talking to a villain, the villain throws a punch, and Stark jolts him with one of the Stealth Armor’s hidden tasers. Commence epic battle!

2. Bleeding Edge Armor

It’s hard to accurately describe the Bleeding Edge Armor and do it justice. Tony Stark’s main reason for creating it was as a way to “reinvent” himself. It was the first of his armors that was completely powered through repulsor technology, increasing its efficiency and streamlining its convenience. Using special nanotechnology, the suit is actually hidden within Stark’s own body and doesn’t appear until he summons it. It doesn’t even have to turn into a suit; Stark can mentally order it to turn into clothing or other structures upon his skin. It’s the ultimate armor as far as convenience, allowing Stark to walk around with reassurance that he can don his suit whenever he wants. He can also add weaponry and additional armor to accommodate the particular situation if it calls for it. In the past, he’s used the technology to equip a boxing glove and large arm-mounted guns. It’s like the Swiss-Army-Knife of Iron Man armors.

1. Sorcerer Armor

The Sorcerer Armor only exists in the What If…? continuity of Marvel. In this universe, Tony Stark is responsible for the car accident that damaged Stephen Strange’s hands. Stark travels the world searching for a cure for Strange, eventually encountering the Ancient One, who instructs him to train to become the Sorcerer Supreme. It’s up to Sorcerer Stark to face off against the evil entity Dormammu, so he combines his sorcery and science to create this new armor. The Sorcerer Armor allows Stark to perform spells faster than any other magician he encounters. The helmet’s display features a drop-down menu that lets Stark analyze attackers and find the perfect counter-spell. Out of all the armors I’ve mentioned, this one is the least likely to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since it is so powerful and because it is not mainstream canon. However, Marvel Studios has taught us to never say never.

We’ve seen a wide variety of Iron Man armors in the past MCU films. As CGI becomes more advanced, it’s possible that we’ll see some more impressive suits in the coming years.
