Trying to single out the best moments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is like trying to find times that Robert Downey Jr. was a terrible Tony Stark; it’s almost impossible. There are so many awesome bits and scenes throughout these movies that you can’t pick which ones are your favorite. Despite the abundance of epic-ness, I think I’ve managed to hone in on the six most satisfying moments that Marvel Studios has brought to us over the years.
6. Groot SMASH!
Hardly anybody thought that Guardians of the Galaxy would be a huge hit. An even smaller number thought that a talking tree voiced by Vin Diesel would end up becoming the most popular character from the film. Groot is everything you can love in a character. He’s caring, selfless, loyal, and, when necessary, bad-ass. Near the end of the film, as the Guardians are storming Ronan’s ship, Groot goes into Beast Mode and single-handedly skewers and pummels an entire squadron of soldiers. After slaughtering the enemies, he turns and gives an adorable smile to his fellows, almost as if he’s expecting a pat on the back and a “good boy!” from Star-Lord.
5. Tony Stark Revealing His Identity
It’s been 7 years since the original Iron Man came out, but I still get chills when watching this film. If I could, I’d add the entire movie as one of the most satisfying moments of the MCU. Alas, I can only pick one specific scene, so I chose the last line of the film. As Tony Stark is about to give a speech at a press conference regarding his connection to the mysterious metal-suited superhero who’s been saving the city, he drops his cue cards and declares, “I am Iron Man.” It’s so simple yet so powerful. This scene also sets off a chain reaction that led to the forming of the Avengers. If Stark didn’t admit he was Iron Man, then Nick Fury may not have come to him and ask for his participation in the Avengers Initiative. It’s the little things that matter…
4. Steve Rogers Fighting … Everyone!
I absolutely love a good fight scene. Most of the MCU films have had one or two scenes dedicated to a good fight between superheroes. However, none of the other films compare to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I was so impressed by the amazing choreography in this film that I briefly forgot I was watching a superhero movie. Usually, you watch heroes exchange one or two blows and then commence chasing after one another. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we skip all that and watch Steve Rogers go hand-to-hand with numerous villains, from an elevator of rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, to a one-on-one duel with the Winter Soldier. The fights are absolutely incredible. I can watch Steve vs. the Winter Soldier over and over until YouTube bans me from hitting the repeat button.
3. Avengers Assembled
There’s a reason Avengers Assemble is the most popular and successful movie of the MCU. It finally gathers together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes after watching them go solo for so long. The small problem with the film is that it took forever to get the heroes to work together as a team to save the planet. The first 80% of the movie involves the heroes bickering on the Helicarrier or fighting amongst themselves. It’s not until the big battle at the climax that we see them actually assemble. Watching that scene for the first time was like taking a big bite of pizza after going on a diet for three months. It’s like jumping into a refreshing pool after working in the hot sun all day. It’s simply beautiful.
2. Hulk vs. Loki
Pop quiz: What is the Incredible Hulk known for? Answer: smashing. The Hulk smashes. That’s what he does. He did plenty of smashing in his own film and throughout Avengers Assemble, but for some reason, none of those scenes are as satisfying as the moment when he takes on Loki. The first time I saw the scene, I didn’t know what to expect. Loki tries to talk down to the giant green monster, as if that would work, and promptly gets tossed around like an Asgardian ragdoll. Loki’s been a villainous jackass the entire film and finally gets his comeuppance. The Hulk has been dishing out his own brand of justice on the Chitauri soldiers around the city. Now what happens when you combine these two elements? You get this:
1. Spider-Man’s Return
The Internet has been abuzz with rumours and speculation since the recent announcement of Spider-Man entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Up until now, Spidey has been restricted to Sony’s established universe. This has angered fans who have desperately pleaded for the web-slinger to join forces with the Avengers. Now that it’s been confirmed that he’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can look forward to a plethora of possibilities to properly explore his storylines. If you thought the MCU was excellent up until now, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised at what the future holds in store. With great Spider-Man comes great films. Wait…
We’re roughly halfway through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which means we still have a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years. The past couple of movies have given us incredible and memorable scenes that will stick in our minds for years to come. I can only imagine what satisfying moments we’ll witness in the future.
