TRAILER: Tomorrowland

I first caught the trailer for Disney’s Tomorrowland during this past Super Bowl, and at the time, I didn’t think much of it. It was a very short teaser that simply showed us a girl picking up a pin and being transported to an alternate world. Oh, and there was something about George Clooney. Recently, we got to enjoy the full trailer and see a little more of what this movie is about. You can check out the full trailer below:

Right away, I figured that this was just another way for Disney to cash in on one of its theme park attractions, just like Pirates of the Caribbean. Since I’ve never been to Disneyland or Disney World, I’m not too familiar with the Tomorrowland attraction, but I do know that it revolves around a futuristic theme. It appears that the Tomorrowland film is borrowing this concept and adding an essence of fantasy mixed in with the science-fiction.

The main character, Casey, is a science-obsessed teenager who discovers a magical pin that transports her to a futuristic world where “anything is possible”. However, the pin has an unusual functionality that seems to toss her back and forth between our world and this other world. In order to understand the pin’s capabilities and how to control them, she seeks out guidance from Frank Walker, a recluse who has experienced this phenomenon before and may be able to help her. Things get hectic when a troop of armed robots seek out Frank and Casey and try to capture them through the use of scientific weaponry and gadgets. Frank locks down his home, and then leads Casey back to Tomorrowland so that they can learn more of its secrets.

This movie has potential to be really awesome. Disney doesn’t often make bad movies, but the problem that they face is that they get so greedy. Remember when Pirates of the Caribbean first came out and everybody was obsessed with it? Four movies later and the concept has gotten stale. I think that Tomorrowland is the start of a long and drawn-out series that will slowly decline with each passing installment. The more movies they add to a series, the more charm they take away from the original film.

But I’m going to be fair and give this film the benefit of the doubt. The visuals and special effects already look awesome, and I’m interested in seeing this new side of Clooney. I’m tired of him playing the charming, charismatic playboy that has become part of his shtick. It’s about time he adopts a new character who seems to be a reserved curmudgeon with a paranoid perspective on life.

I believe this film could also be pretty dark given some of the elements we saw in the trailer. I was slightly shocked when Clooney severed one of the robots’ hands, and when he triggered a laser grid to dice up another pursuing robot. It’s not like they’re killing live people, but it still caught me off-guard. Once again, this is nothing new, especially if you look at the violence in most of the Pirates of the Caribbean films (I really need to stop comparing this to those movies…).

It’s difficult to go into too much detail about this trailer when it’s such an original concept. Other films that have been flooding the theaters recently are sequels, reboots, or adaptations, so there’s a lot more to talk about in regards to source material. With Tomorrowland being based off something like a theme park attraction, it’s hard to gauge until we have a longer trailer or a better synopsis. For now, I’ll file this under “maybe”, and keep my eyes out for reviews when it hits theaters.

Tomorrowland will release on May 22nd, 2015.
