Season 2 of Daredevil is currently in pre-production, and two major new characters have already been announced! Everyone expected the inclusion of Elektra (to be played by Elodie Yung) but the announcement that Jon Bernthal would be coming on as the Punisher was much more surprising. But who else is going to show up?
While the rumours are already circulating that Daredevil’s biggest nemesis Bullseye might appear, I’m personally hoping that they’ll save him for Season 3 so that he gets the attention he deserves and doesn’t have to share the spotlight with Elektra and Punisher.
That said, there are definitely some other Marvel characters that would be awesome to see on Daredevil, if only for an episode or two.
Here are my top picks:
6. Black Widow
While it makes perfect sense for Daredevil‘s first season to be devoid of any Avengers, I think at least one should be brought in for Season 2, and who better than frequent Daredevil partner Black Widow? In the comics, the two pair up all the time, and even starred together in a series titled Daredevil and the Black Widow for a couple years. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to see the two swinging into action together in live-action?
Now that the Avengers have moved out of New York, Daredevil and the other Defenders will be getting a lot more publicity. Why wouldn’t Black Widow show up to check them out and see if it’s worth bringing any of them onto the team? She is currently the second most senior Avenger (after Cap), so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched for her to be sent on a recruitment mission.
Not only would this make for an absolutely awesome episode (or more!!!) of Daredevil, but it could also help tie the Netflix universe to the films. Given the fact that Daredevil and the Defenders are rumoured to show up in one of the Infinity War films, it would be a good idea to establish their connections sooner rather than later.
Technically, this character has already appeared on the show in the form of Melvin Potter, whose workshop was full of hints at his future alter-ego. In the comics, Potter builds himself a costume and becomes the villain Gladiator (think Russell Crowe‘s Maximus with spinning blades on his wrists). Gladiator proves a formidable foe, although his sanity does start to come into question when he actually starts believing he is a Roman gladiator.
Gladiator eventually becomes an ally of Daredevil, and since Potter’s allegiance is already ambiguous on the show, the possibility of Gladiator coming around to the hero’s side could make for a nice redemption story. In the hands of the show’s talented writers, Potter could become a solid, well-rounded secondary character.
Either way, you know Gladiator would give us some great action scenes!
4. The Hand
Okay, so with Elektra confirmed, this is pretty much a gimme. For the uninitiated, the Hand are a group of mystical ninjas who have their fingers in various aspects of organised crime, especially assassination. They famously wear red and are formidable in their use of both magic and martial arts.
Elektra is easily the most famous member, but I would really like to see Daredevil go up against a full-on horde, something we saw many times in the 80s after they debuted in Frank Miller’s famous run on the Daredevil comics.
We got hints of the Hand last season with Nobu, especially with his red costume in Episode 9 “Speak of the Devil”. It’s all but confirmed that Nobu was a member of the Hand, so maybe we’ll see them coming to avenge his death, or (more likely) to reclaim his criminal organisation.
