TRAILER: Suicide Squad #2

All right! New Suicide Squad trailer! I honestly wasn’t expecting one so soon since the film isn’t supposed to come out until August, but I’m not complaining, especially since this preview was so much fun! Check out the latest trailer below.

What was the first thing that struck you? Don’t lie – it was the music. I mean, any trailer that features Bohemian Rhapsody HAS to be good, right?

Anyway, the trailer itself shows us a lot about the film, but it keeps most of the plot elements under wraps. Take note, Marvel and DC: this is how you market a film without giving away major chunks of the plot. Suicide Squad got us excited but didn’t show us too much.

My best guess at the film’s plot: Batman catches the Joker and throws him in jail (as evidenced from a scene where Bats is on top of Joker’s speeding car). While in prison, Joker is visited by Dr. Harleen Quinzel, but one night, he takes her hostage and tortures her, turning her into Harley Quinn. Flash-forward a few years and the Joker has escaped prison and has returned to terrorizing Gotham. The Suicide Squad is assembled to take him and his goons down.

A few months ago, I assumed that Enchantress was the Squad’s target since there was a huge emphasis placed on her role in the film. In this trailer, it looks like she’s actually part of the team, and a heavy hitter at that! However, it’s possible that MAYBE she’s in cahoots with the Joker, which could explain why an entire team of lethal villains is needed to take him out.

The greatest thing about this trailer (aside from the music) was that we got a little bit of characterization from almost every member of the cast. Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, Joker – they all get a chance to impress us, even if it’s just with a brief line of dialogue. I was especially curious about Captain Boomerang since I’m not a fan of Jai Courtney and I didn’t think he would do the part justice, but I may be wrong. His few seconds of action were excellent.

It was also great to hear more of Jared Leto‘s Joker, and I’m still optimistic that he’s going to be fantastic in the role. How can you not get chills hearing his voice?

One thing that really bothers me is the response to the trailer. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s totally cool. The problem is that people are already saying that this trailer makes the film look like a rip-off of Guardians of the Galaxy. What exactly makes it a rip-off? Is it the choice in music? Is it the dark humor mixed in with the action? Is it the “rag-tag team of misfits” trope? It’s not like all that is exclusive to Guardians of the Galaxy. This tone actually fits the Suicide Squad concept to a T, especially if you look at the New 52 run of the comics.

Simply put, I enjoyed the trailer very much. In fact, out of all the comic book movies coming out this year, I think it’s on my “most anticipated” list. I’m more excited for this film than X-Men: Apocalypse, Doctor Strange, and Gambit (if that film even gets released in 2016). I’ve enjoyed the concept of the Suicide Squad for a while, and I hope we get a proper live-action adaptation of the team this time around (I wasn’t too fond of Arrow or Smallville‘s versions).

Suicide Squad comes out in theaters on August 5th, 2016.

  • I love your point about trailers not giving away plot. Imo, it happens far too often. I almost fear watching trailers of movies I really want to see. I also liked the teasers of each character’s personality in the trailer. Nice analysis.
