Seven years after his introduction in the disastrous Wolverine: Origins, Deadpool is back, with his very own solo movie. The film, which stars Ryan Reynolds, in a role he was born to play, was released last week and has instantly become a fan favourite, some labelling it as the best comic book film to date. If you know the character, you know the satirical humour that comes with him, and the film didn’t disappoint. There were some real laugh out loud moments, so many in fact, that it was hard to whittle it down to just six choices.
Obviously this article is going to contain spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the film, I warn you to stop reading.
Are they gone? Ok good, anyway, I’ve attempted to list the top 6 funniest moments from the film.
6. Stan Lee
Starting off the list is this hilarious cameo. If Marvel have a film out, you can bet Stan Lee will appear, and Deadpool is no different. In what might possibly be his best cameo yet, topping his one from The Amazing Spider-man, which was my favourite until now. Stan Lee, the Godfather of Marvel comics has been reduced to being a DJ at a strip joint. What made this cameo so great, is seeing the usual upbeat comic legend spouting lines such as “You can’t buy love, but you can rent it for three minutes”.
5. Francis
The main antagonist of the movie, Ajax played by Brit Ed Skrein is a typical evil comic villain. Deadpool of course, takes great delight in teasing and belittling the bad guy. This running gag is played out after Wade finds out Ajax’s real name is Francis. This results in some hilarious scenes, the best of which involves the hero literally spelling out the bad guys name using the bodies of mercenaries that he killed previously.
4. Season’s Greetings
It’s easy to see why the film has an R rating. This scene in particular is hilariously played out by star Ryan Reynolds and co-star Morena Baccarin. The use of a montage to show their growing romance is genius. This scene sees the two characters celebrate their love for each other throughout different holidays, by making love in various and often frightening ways.
3. The Finale
This climactic scene perfectly captures the dark humour of the character. Deadpool has finally got Ajax where he wants him, a gun pointing at his head ready to kill him… until Colossus, being the do-gooder that he is attempts to talk Deadpool out of killing his nemeses. If this was any other comic book film, you could bet that the good guy would let him live, only to eventually escape and do bad things again. Not Deadpool though, while Colossus is rambling on about what it takes to be a hero, Deadpool shoots Ajax point blank. This dark scene is only made funnier because of the heroes reactions. A shocked Colossus vomits, while Deadpool tries to reason with the big Russian as to why he did it.
2. Deadpool V Colossus
I was tempted to place this one in first place. The moment I’m talking about is Deadpool squaring up to an angry Colossus. Of course being able to turn into a strong metallic form of himself, the Merc with a mouth had no chance. After letting Ajax slip out of his hands, an angry Deadpool decides to take his anger out on the mutant. This results in the masked vigilante breaking several bones, in very hilarious ways.
1. Breaking the Fourth Wall
Okay this one is kind of cheating. Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall to address the audience, and the film was no different. Deadpool knows he is in a film, making remarks about actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. It’s one particular hilarious scene that tops the lot though, which sees Deadpool address the fact that there are only two X-Men in the film, which is a knock to Fox for not giving them a big enough budget.
The film was daring with its humour and it more than paid off. Deadpool managed to blend humour, action and a compelling story into one movie. Proving you don’t always have to be serious when making a comic book film. A sequel has already been green lit, after the huge success of the film so far.
