This has been an intense week for me. I mean, first I got to see the glorious Deadpool, then The Walking Dead came back with an epic midseason premiere, and now we have the first trailer for Daredevil Season 2? Is the media world TRYING to give me a heart attack? I don’t know how I’ll be able to wait until next month for Daredevil to return. I guess I can keep watching the trailer over and over. That should satisfy me, right? If you haven’t caught the Daredevil Season 2 preview yet, have a look below.
I can’t be alone in thinking that the Punisher’s arrival will be the best part of the second season. I still remember how excited I was to see that Jon Bernthal had been chosen for the role as the notorious Frank Castle. Right away, I knew this would turn out to be a fantastic casting choice. After watching the trailer, my point still stands.
I absolutely love when actors and actresses go the extra mile to get into their roles. According to one interview, Bernthal spent the first few months of shooting walking across the Brooklyn Bridge alone to get a sense of isolation and solitude. He wanted to really get into the psyche of Frank Castle, who isn’t exactly the most optimistic person in the world. It’s stuff like this that makes me think he’s committed to the role. That’s what we want to see. We want actors to adopt an entirely different mindset in order to portray a character. They aren’t just playing a character; they’re BEING the character.
Quick recap of the Punisher character for the casual viewers: Frank Castle is an ex-military operative whose family is killed in the crossfire of a mob war. Frank now roams New York as a vigilante, mercilessly eliminating criminals, including those who slaughtered his family. According to him, it’s not vengeance; it’s punishment. This is where he and Daredevil clash. Daredevil doesn’t approve of Punisher’s brutal methods and “take no prisoners” mindset. Meanwhile, Castle thinks Daredevil is too soft on the scum of the city. As the Punisher puts it in the trailer, “You hit them and they get back up. I hit them and THEY STAY DOWN!”
It’s clear now that the Punisher is going to be the main antagonist of Daredevil Season 2, and I’m totally okay with that. Kingpin was a great villain, and I would’ve been thrilled to see Bullseye or the Owl make an appearance as a Big Bad, but this looks like it’ll work out just fine. We all know that Punisher and Daredevil will eventually become allies by the end of the season, but what could possibly cause them to put aside their differences and force them to team up? As far as we know, there aren’t any other major villains coming to the season just yet (fan-favorite Elektra makes an appearance, but I think she’ll be an ally to Daredevil rather than another antagonist). It’s possible that the conclusion of the season might just involve Punisher, Daredevil, and Elektra joining forces to take on an army of criminals and mob bosses who are thriving in the power vacuum left behind by the Kingpin. It’s all so much to take in!
Speaking of Elektra, we barely get to see her during the trailer. In the comics, she’s an assassin who frequently clashed with Daredevil before becoming his ally and lover. It’s still way too early to make an assessment on the show’s version of the character. I’m not really familiar with actress Elodie Yung‘s skill set, so her portrayal can go either way. Jennifer Garner and 20th Century Fox tarnished the Elektra name back in the early 2000s. Let’s hope that Yung finally does the character justice!
While this show is all about Daredevil, I can’t shake my excitement for the Punisher. As I’ve stated numerous times in the past, the Punisher is one of my favorite Marvel characters. We’ve had several attempts at a live-action character, but nobody has perfected him just yet. I’m praying that THIS version works out. We deserve it.
I feel a little bad for neglecting Daredevil during this review, but come on! Can you blame me? Punisher stole the show. We’re supposed to get another trailer in a week or two, so maybe Daredevil (and Elektra) will get more screen time then. I hope this show lets the titular character get the attention he deserves.
Daredevil Season 2 premieres March 18th, 2016.
