TRAILER: X-Men: Apocalypse

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropping in just over a week it was easy to forget about the other big comic book blockbusters that are due to be released this year. That is until Fox just released the new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and what a trailer it is! Awash with brand spanking new footage, the trailer featured more action, more Apocalypse and for better or worse, more Jennifer Lawrence. Fox must be rubbing their hands in delight after the mammoth hit that was Deadpool . They have their chance to truly eradicate the memory of last year’s Fantastic Four with the new X-Men entry and prove they are capable of producing well made comic book movies.

Let’s start with the positives, of which there were many. Firstly, we got a better glimpse at the young X-Men members, with the likes of Scott Summers having a more prominent role in the trailer. Professor Xavier almost cockily adds upon hearing the latest threat “I fell a great swirl of pity for the poor soul who comes to my school looking for trouble”. Having taken a backseat in previous trailers it is nice to see Summers/Cyclops using his powers. There’s also a better glimpse at the young Nightcrawler in action as he takes on Archangel, who looks equally as impressive.

Highlight of Days of Future Past, Quicksilver looks to have a bigger role in the film, which will make a lot of people including myself happy. It also looks as though the speedster will look to steal the film again with another slow-motion action piece. Evan Peters really made the character his own in his brief appearance in the previous film, it will be interesting to see where they take him this time.

As for the big bad, well after the initial shock for most people on the internet at his appearance, it’s safe to say Apocalypse looks the part, actor Oscar Isaacs is carrying on his steady rise in the industry after recently starring in acclaimed films such as Ex-Machina and of course The Force Awakens, looks to be giving a performance worthy of such an important character. The original mutant is set on destroying the X-Men and the world, with his new found Four Horseman (Archangel, Psyclocke, Magneto and Storm) by his side.

Speaking of, we also get a better look at Psylocke, a character which hasn’t yet featured in the live action series. She looks gloriously badass as one might have hoped she would have been as she is seen holding her own during one epic battle scene with Beast. Star Olivia Munn seems passionate about the role from the interviews she has given and looking at the trailers it shows.

There was a lot crammed in during the two-and-a-half minute trailer. It looks to be the biggest film in the franchise featuring massive set pieces and plenty of action. Director Bryan Singer has also teased that it will be the longest film in the franchise, continuing the theme of butt numbingly long comic book movies.

Now for the negatives, which aren’t really all that negative, rather me being picky. I, like most am getting rather tired of Mystique being at the forefront of everything. She’s not a bad character in the slightest, but having her as the main character due to Jennifer Lawrence’s increasing success is getting a little boring. I get she’s arguably the biggest star of the film, but ease up a little! Give some breathing space to the other characters.

Only time will tell if it holds up with the rest of the comic films released this year. But Bryan Singer directing an X-Men movie can only mean good things surely.

X-Men: Apocalypse
is due to hit screens from 19th May 2016.
