AP2HYC TV AWARDS 2016 | Biggest, “Oh no they didn’t,” Plot Twist

The 2015-16 television season brought with it already beloved superheroes, as well as a slew of new comic-inspired shows. To celebrate another year of awesome, nerdy, super television, AP2HYC is hosting our second annual TV Awards! Be sure to cast your votes in each category, and check back to find out which shows and characters were victorious!

While it’s always fun to watch standard shows with the same generic formula, it’s even more entertaining to feel your jaw hit the floor as an enormous plot twist keeps you on the edge of your seat. There was no shortage of such moments this year, but the following four set the internet abuzz post-viewing.

Swayed Daisy (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

Best Twist- Swayed Daisy

“The Team,” was one of my favorite episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season due large in part to the fact that it felt like an old-school espionage mystery. Much of the hour focused on sussing out which of the Secret Warriors had been mind-warped by big-bad Hive and, while there were more red-herrings than in an Agatha Christie novel, the reveal that it was Daisy of all people who had switched allegiances was a true jaw-dropper. The fact that she happily threw much of her team under the bus (to throw everyone else off her trail), had no qualms murdering Malick in cold blood, and barely batted an eye while quaking the Playground hangar to the ground made the reveal that much more insane. –Silje Falck-Pedersen

Jay Garrick is Zoom (The Flash)

Best Twist- Jay Garrick

Whether you thought it was rather suspicious that Jay Garrick compared to the source material was looking rather good for his age or not, what an absolute curveball. Not only was it a demonstration of Zoom’s complete and utter calculated genius, it also devastated Barry on two levels. At first he lost a close ally, later he discovered he had imprisoned his Father’s Earth 2 counterpart. It was a betrayal of Shakespearian proportions. Neither Earth One nor Two will ever be the same again, and the enemy of my enemy dynamic has been completely flipped on its head. The Caitlin dynamic also added an additional parallel to the mix, Zoom letting his guard down, ultimately leading to his downfall. –Jake Barber

The Glenn Fake-Out (The Walking Dead)

Best Twist- Glenn Death

To some, this is arguably the smallest twist of this year’s television season. Many knew from the get-go (or at least claimed to have known) that fan-favorite Glenn was not actually killed by the hoard of walkers that he fell head first into. The fact that Glenn was screaming his head off as the walkers tore guts and innards from a body made it seem as though Maggie’s hubby was a goner. Many viewers were left a bit traumatized by the sequence, disbelieving that a pivotal character could be killed in such a way and willing to grasp at any indicator that Glenn wasn’t really dead at all. As it turns out, the skeptics were right to be wary of the framing of Glenn’s, “death,” because… lo and behold, he hadn’t died at all. Sure, it took way too long for this fact to be known, but most people were able to push aside their irritation towards the fake-out in favor of being relieved that dear Glenn is still with us. (Though… who knows if he is. We still don’t know who Negan took a bat to in the finale…) –Silje Falck-Pedersen

The Man in the Iron Mask Reveal (The Flash)

Best Twist- Man in Iron Mask

Whether you saw this coming like I did, or it came as a complete surprise, this reveal was more than satisfying. The most exciting aspects of this twist were the ramifications upon the time stream and Barry having to confront both his past and present. Ironically, although all the man in the Iron Mask could do was tap on his cell, at no point did the plot feel tapped out. The speed force continues to yield all manner of possibilities and this seemed like one of the most rewarding to date. Well played The Flash, well played. –Jake Barber
