Who’s Playing Who in Spider-Man: Homecoming?

New Spider-News everyone! If you haven’t heard, the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming keeps growing every day and recently, we received some interesting additions to the upcoming Marvel film.

It has been announced that Donald Glover (Community, The Martian), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, Silicon Valley), and Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, The OC) have all been cast in unspecified roles in the upcoming 2017 film.

UNSPECIFIED. The word is like a shot of Red Bull straight into my imagination. So, while my brain is on overdrive for what could be, here’s some thoughts on who the three actors could play in the upcoming film.

A. Donald Glover

donaldglover

This isn’t the first time Donald Glover has been in the Spider-Man news. Back in 2011, when The Amazing Spider-Man was in pre-production, (sidebar: it’s crazy it took only 5 for the entire Spider-Man movie universe to be rebooted, but then again it only took 4 years for Batman. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying Hollywood is fickle.) an online campaign was started for Glover to be cast as the new Spider-Man. While some people championed the idea of black Spider-Man (this is roughly the same time Miles Morales took up the mantle as the new Spider-Man), others were less enthusiastic and more racist. But now here we are in 2016, and Glover has finally made it into the Spider-verse.

1. Flash Thompson

Though Donald hasn’t been in high school for some time, he still exudes a very youthful nature and look. That said, I would find there to be no problem with him being cast as bully-turned-friend Flash Thompson. It is easy to see Glover as an older bully who terrorizes Peter Parker, but then has a change of heart after a life or death situation involving Spider-Man.

2. Randy Robertson

Randy Robertson, son of Daily Bugle editor Robbie Robertson, is another solid choice for Glover. Similar to Flash Thompson, Randy could be another high school bully situation which turns to a friendship after Randy is helped by Spider-Man. Randy would also provide Spider-Man with a direct link to Peter Parker’s future workplace.

B. Martin Starr

Whether you know him mainly as Bill Haverchuck, Bertram Gilfoyle, or any of his other roles, Martin Starr has embodied characters that people in the geek world saw themselves in. With his tall and lanky frame, glasses, long hair, and droll voice, Starr could find himself in a variety of roles in the upcoming film. Will be be a teacher at the high school? A scientist at Oscorp? Or maybe….

1. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus

I base this mostly on the look of the Ultimate Spider-Man version of Doctor Octopus whose long, dark hair and glasses bare somewhat of a resemblance to Starr. Along with looks, I feel that Starr’s taciturn personality, and dour demeanor could serve the troubled Doc Ock’s character very well.

2. Quentin Beck/Mysterio

mysteriocorrect

This is by far the longest shot of all the shots I’m taking on this list. Mysterio, in the film world, is hard to pull off earnestly, but one that could provide a very interesting foil to the new Spider-Man. If Mysterio wouldn’t appear in the film, then maybe Quentin Beck would. Before becoming Mysterio, Quentin Beck was a special effects wizard and magician who figured that the life of a super-villain was his calling. It wouldn’t be too hard to see Starr in that role for now and then maybe down the road, develop into the villain.

C. Logan Marshall-Green

You might remember Logan Marshall-Green from his role as Charlie Holloway in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel, Prometheus, or you might remember him as the winner of the Tom Hardy lookalike contest. Either way, he has been cast in an uspecified role like the others, except in Green’s case, it has been noted that he will be a secondary villain in the film, in cahoots with Michael Keaton’s Vulture. This narrows down the choices ever so slightly.

1. Herman Schultz/The Shocker

shockerCorrect

No one would ever call The Shocker a top-tier villain. Most of the time, The Shocker finds himself as a top-tier henchmen more than anything else. That said, this would be a perfect role for Green to play. It is decidedly a secondary antagonist role, and much like I said before with Mysterio, the film could portray the beginnings of The Shocker as Herman Schultz, and show his transformation as the film progresses.

2. Jason Macendale/Hobgoblin

hobgoblinfixed

This guess is mostly for me. I have always been a fan of Hobgoblin over Green Goblin. More vicious, more sinister, it’s a role that an actor could really chew the scenery with. However, even with the assumption that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be pulling a lot from “Ultimate Spider-Man,” Hobgoblin brings a sense of camp that I feel the MCU has been trying to stay away from, not to mention we have seen some form of Goblin in almost all of the Spider-Man films. I may want Hobgoblin, but the world might be ready for something new.

BONUS – Hannibal Burress

hannibal

Hannibal Burress has also recently been cast in the film. He most likely will be playing a character that strongly resembles and acts like Hannibal Burress. Possibly a stand-up comedian. I may not be 100% on the rest of the characters in this list, but I’m pretty sure on this one.

Who do you think these actors will play in the film? Will they be major characters we will see throughout or just simply someone Spidey runs into? Sound off in the comments or send us your thoughts on Twitter!
