SDCC 2016: News Roundup

Another year means another weekend during which a small population of the world gets to experience the wonder that is San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). They get to see exclusive teases before anyone else, attend panels with top-secret reveals, and live-Tweet the whole dang thing to make the rest of us jealous. Luckily, the big-wigs at all of our favorite companies seem to realize that it’s better to get all of their goods out to the masses as quickly as possible, so those of us not in sunny San Diego haven’t had to wait too long to get our pop-culture fix.

Check out all of the major news from the weekend below!

Television

Marvel

Daredevil

Daredevil fans can rest easy knowing that their favorite red devil will continue to protect the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Honestly, I thought the show had already been picked up so, while this didn’t really seem like, “breaking news,” to me, it at least was paired with the introduction of the sweet new Defenders tease. What an awesome logo.

Luke Cage

Those in attendance at Thursday’s Luke Cage panel may have been the first to see the teaser trailer for the latest Netflix/Marvel creation, but those of us not lucky enough to be at Comic Con didn’t have to wait long to get our hands on the footage! The Netflix/Marvel partnership has yet to produce a failure and it looks as though Luke Cage will be no different considering the badassery that plays out to the soundtrack of Wu-Tang Clan. Check it out and be sure to catch the entire series when it hits Netflix on September 30th!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Vengeance is coming and Ghost Rider is confirmed! Robbie Reyes, portrayed by actor Gabriel Luna, will be coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when the show’s fourth season premieres this fall!!! Executive producers indicated that the new arrival might have something to do with the upcoming Doctor Strange… That was the show’s major reveal of the weekend and, although no new footage was shown due to the fact that the cast started filming the day prior to their panel, Marvel did release Season 3’s blooper reel as well as the FitzSimmons and SkyeWard audition reels. Additionally, when asked at the panel about whether the non-pickup of Marvel’s Most Wanted might mean that fan-favorites Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter might return to S.H.I.E.L.D. EP Jed Whedon replied, “It’s definitely classified but… keep watching.” S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday, September 20th in new time slot 10PM!

Iron Fist

A fifty-second tease full of intrigue and a single line, “Hello Danny.” Iron Fist is a’comin and Marvel sure isn’t giving us a ton to speculate over. Check out the teaser below!

Legion

Though Netflix is the primary source of Marvel television, FX is about to make a name for itself where powerful mutants are concerned. New series Legion is delving into the wonderful world of mutants and seems like it will be a lot of fun. Check out the trailer for the new series!

DC

Powerless

powerless-poster

NBC’s newest comedy actually seemed to get pretty great reviews from those who got to watch the Pilot at SDCC. A clear departure from the other DC-centric shows currently on television, Powerless seems to be less focused on doom-and-gloom and more focused on the comedy gold that comes with living in a world of superheroes and super villains. Evidently, though focused on the poor, human, insurance agents that are left to deal with the wreckage caused by the heroes and villains, Powerless will be bringing some known DC characters into the fold. Aquaman, Green Lantern, Brainiac, Crimson Fox, and Jack O’Lantern were all mentioned in the first episode and series stars already confirmed that Crimson Fox will be making an appearance as well. It seems that this is kind of DC’s version of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so we’ll see how long it takes before people stop requesting DC cameos and instead enjoy the actual characters of the show.

Gotham

The pseudo-chaos that enfolded last season on Gotham seems to be having residual effects on Jim Gordon and Co. this year. The teaser trailer brought to Comic Con was really more of a recap than anything, and seemed to indicate that the characters will continue on the respective paths that have taken up the first two seasons. What new teases the trailer did provide focused predominantly on the Court of Owls, which seem to be the possible big threat of Season 3.

Supergirl

Though called Supergirl it seems that this weekend was all about Superman and Wonder Woman. Tyler Hoechlin, who was previously announced as the newest Man of Steel, and former Wonder Woman Linda Carter, joined the cast at the Supergirl panel this weekend where some small teases about their characters, and their impact on those we already know and love. Evidently, Kara and Clark may clash as all families do, largely due to the fact that the two have had very different experiences dealing with their role as HERO to their respective cities. Naturally, now that the show has moved from CBS to the CW, discussion of the much-beloved crossovers took place, with everyone all but confirming that more would (obviously) be happening. The show has yet to begin filming Season 2, so no new footage was revealed at the con.

The Flash

Uh oh… looks like the time-twister from last season’s finale of The Flash has had some serious ramifications on Barry and Co. The, “Brave new world,” AKA FlashPoint that Barry has whipped up as a result of last year’s decisions is full of familiar faces that have no recollection of Barry. Sure, his parents are seemingly alive and well, but a storm is brewing and it looks as though the consequences will be dire. Check out the Season 3 trailer!

Legends of Tomorrow

The big news of the weekend seemed to be that  Arrow’s Oliver Queen, Malcolm Merlyn, and Damien Darhk  will be all be appearing in the Season 2 premiere of Legends of Tomorrow. It seems that the White Canary is none-too-pleased about the death of sister Laurel Lance, at Darhk’s hand, and still holds some bitterness of her own death, caused by Merlyn. Also revealed is new face Rex Tyler, self-proclaimed member of, “The Justice Society of America,” played by Suits actor Patrick Adams. It seems as though the Legends are continuing with their usual shenanigans, bringing new faces into the fold and doing their best to right the frankly numerous wrongs of the world. Check out the Season 2 tease!

Arrow

Out with the old, in with the new? The first look at Arrow’s fifth season brought with it a ton of new and old faces that seem to be the newest team of crimefighters in Star City. The latest video tease also gave us some long-awaited info regarding Oliver and the Bratva! In additional news, Katie Cassidy has inked a deal similar to Wentworth Miller’s that establishes her as a series regular across all of the CW’s super shows so it looks like we haven’t seen the last of Laurel Lance and her numerous alter-egos after all!

Miscellaneous

The Walking Dead

While the panel for the Walking Dead couldn’t reveal much in terms of, “Who did Negan kill?” SDCC brought with it a new teaser trailer for the upcoming season (premiering October 23rd) that makes it clear that it’s going to be the year of Negan. Sure, the majority of the trailer served as a montage of the past moments of all of the possible victims of Lucille, but there was some new footage that included the anticipated, “Welcome to the Kingdom.” Also…. TIGER.

Fear the Walking Dead

The trailer for the back half of Season 2 debuted this weekend and it looks like things will be bloodier than ever!

Game of Thrones

Via TVLine, it seems that the majority of the Game of Thrones SDCC panel focused less on the upcoming season and more on the recent conclusion of Season 6. Though no new footage of the actual show was shown, there was a behind-the-scenes video tease that, at the very least, confirmed that Game of Thrones is actually in production.

Once Upon a Time

The much beloved show revealed that the characters will be entering, “A whole new world,” by bringing Disney prince Aladdin into the fold. Additionally, it seems as though baddie Jafar will be making an appearance as well. While new characters are a given, it appears that we’ll also see the return of an old character with the reemergence of Evil Queen Regina. Here’s the trailer for the upcoming season!

Marvel

Before getting into the specific films that released teases this weekend, we should start off with: Marvel has itself a new intro and it looks a bit like…

Thor: Ragnarok

Saturday morning started off with a reveal at the Marvel booth! The armor of Gladiator Hulk was on full display when the show floor opened and looks mighty interesting. During Saturday night’s massive Marvel takeover of Hall H, the official Thor: Ragnarok logo was revealed.

Black Panther

Casting news aplenty! Michael B. Jordan has been confirmed as Erik Killmonger, the Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira is Okoye (head of the Dora Milaje), and Lupita Nyong’o has been confirmed as Nakia! This movie is going to be EPIC.

Doctor Strange

The second full-length trailer for Doctor Strange gives viewers a bit more insight into the weirdness that is the mystic arts. We got a lot more of the villainous Mads Mikkelsen who is set to go head-to-head against Benedict Cumberbatch’s doctor. Check out the trailer below!

 Captain Marvel

The BIGGEST (in my opinion) news from Marvel’s takeover of Hall H is the fact that Brie Larson has official been cast in the role of Captain Marvel. Fresh off an Oscar win, Larson has been rumored for the role (much to the public’s general delight) for some time and San Diego Comic Con brought with it the official announcement! I was already PUMPED for this film and am now even more giddy to see what’s to come.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2

One of the few videos not to be immediately released online by Marvel post-SDCC screening was the Guardians of the Galaxy teaser, which audience members say depicted adorable baby Groot, Yondu, and Rocket running away from some Ravagers. Cut to an actual teaser trailer that was broken down by ScreenRant! Additional news coming from the panel involves Kurt Russell being confirmed as Star Lord’s father, Ego, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis! PLUS… the Guardians are coming to Disney via an awesome attraction!

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The official synopsis of the film has been revealed! “A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Marvel Studios’ “Captain: Civil War,” begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Additionally, some pretty sweet concept art was shown that has a lot of people excited for Spidey’s reintroduction to the MCU.

DC

Justice League

Heyo!!!!! DC brought it to San Diego this year, first giving us an epic tease of the JLA in a dramatic poster and then immediately dropping the trailer for the film. While we may not see Superman in the trailer, we do get to see Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Batman in action. And, though the Man of Steel might not make an appearance in the footage, he is featured prominently on the first cast photo of the film. Check it out!

Suicide Squad

We got yet another trailer for the upcoming Suicide Squad, this one heavily focused on Jared Leto’s version of the Joker. Additionally there was a special 3-minute trailer for those in Hall H that Nerdist got its hands on for your viewing pleasure! They’re right in saying that the footage is some of the best yet but I wonder if it might have more to do with the Comic Con weekend in general. I feel like we’re being inundated with SS trailers as of late which, hopefully, is indicative that this will actually be a DCEU film worth watching.

Wonder Woman

It seems fitting that, in celebration of 75 years of Wonder Woman, the first trailer for the film starring Gal Gadot was unveiled to the Comic-Con masses. We got our first look of the Wonder Woman armor/suit in action (lasso and all) and a peek at what looks to be a pretty epic battle sequence. Check it out for yourself!

Kong: Skull Island

Loki and Captain Marvel?!?!!? Shwaaaaa?! Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson teamed up for the latest Kong reboot and the first trailer for Kong: Skull Island has officially dropped!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The wonderful world of Harry Potter is back with another epic trailer for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
