6 Things We Want to See in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Expectations are high for America’s favorite wall crawler. After his stint as Tony Stark’s worst-kept-secret weapon in Captain America: Civil War, new kid on the block Spider-Man, portrayed by fresh-faced Tom Holland, will swing into theaters come 2017 with his solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Until then, rumoUrs and speculations have clung to the Web of a possible Spider-Man cameo in Doctor Strange as well as hints of what Spider-Man’s Marvel homecoming will entail. What gets Peter Parker out of his twin bed in the morning? How does it feel to not be solving crime in a onesie anymore? Will Aunt May bake more walnut date loaf? Until these pressing questions are answered, here are the top six things we need to see in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

6. Spider-Man Connecting With Other MCU Characters

We all know Tony Stark is going to pop up, be it to check out Spider-Man’s new gear or to flirt with Aunt May. In Civil War, there’s wasn’t time for Spider-Man to have a battle of wits and quips with his fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe patriots. With his impending involvement in Avengers: Infinity Wars, his own film could serve as his official ice breaker with other characters in the MCU. Perhaps Thor and Hulk will crash land from their epic space road trip. Or maybe Ant-Man and Hawkeye show up at Peter Parker’s school and refer to him as “that Spider boy.” One thing is for sure: once the Marvel heroes assemble for Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man better not keep those witty one-liners to himself.

5. The Daily Bugle

One of the best features of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy was Peter Parker’s part-time job as the freelance photographer for The Daily Bugle. Mostly, it was because of his boss, the easily agitated J. Jonah Jameson, played to absolute perfection by J.K. Simmons. Simmons always brought a much needed hilarity to the trilogy in his crusade to prove Spider-Man was a menace. Sadly, he nor The Daily Bugle were incorporated in The Amazing Spider-Man reboot. Apparently, there wasn’t time between  Gwen Stacy’s ghost dad and the Philip Philips’ montage. With Homecoming focusing more on Peter’s high school life, it’s unlikely Jameson and The Daily Bugle will make an appearance, though I wouldn’t put it past Jameson to exploit child-labor laws. To not bring Jameson and The Daily Bugle back would be crap, crap, and mega-crap.

4. More Aunt May-Type Surprises

No one was more shocked to see this new incarnation of Peter’s Aunt May than Tony Stark. Well, except the internet. One memorable moment of Civil War (besides, you know, the ass-kicking and introductions of Black Panther and this article’s titular character) was the introduction of Marvel’s Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei. Her short but flirty conversation with Tony Stark was an unexpected but fun surprise. Hopefully, Homecoming will dole out more little moments like this in-between the web slinging.

3. Compelling Villain(s)

Marvel Studios is now a well-oiled machine, constantly churning out superhero blockbusters one after another. Despite this, there’s one thing that almost always evades a Marvel film: a good villain. Unfortunately, Loki’s not always available. But there is a shady, top government official waiting in the wings. In Civil War, Marvel had to resort to casting its heroes in villainous roles. Spider-Man is hated by so many colorful characters, there should be no reason that Homecoming’s main villain will be nothing less than amazing. Or at least interesting to some degree. Michael Keaton may be involved as The Vulture, which sounds promising. If they sneak in a government official though…

2. More Peter Parker

Some heroes are nothing without their superpowers. That’s not the case with young Peter Parker. He’s nerdy, enthusiastic and delightfully awkward. Naturally, his high school experience is going to suck. That in itself has a wealth of story options. However, the Sony Spider-Man films never spent much time with Peter while he was in high school. Granted, that was most likely due to Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield both pushing thirty. Most of their Peter Parker high school scenes heavily involved their love interests. Perhaps Marvel will give Spider-Man his golden opportunity to be… Peter Parker.

Another interesting facet is Marvel heroes don’t hide their identities. Yet, most of Spider-Man’s problems in both his superhero and personal life result from his double life. It’s doubtful Iron Man will spill his secret, so this will be uncharted territory for Marvel Studios.

1. A Solo Spider-Man Film Back On Track

Will Marvel Studios put a twice-derailed Sony franchise back on track? That is the multi-million dollar, potentially billion dollar, question. It’s a shame the Spider-Man series has been plagued with such turmoil, because Peter Parker/Spider-Man is such an interesting character. If they don’t bog down Homecoming with too many villains, a love-interest plot that creeps its way into the main story arc, and any scenes involving jazz clubs, it may have a chance.
