Titan Comics are always delivering a number of goodies for everyone. Ranging from the popular Tenth and Twelfth Doctors to medieval zombies, there’s something here for all audiences. With so much many comics to delve through, below are a series of mini reviews to help you get started. All of these smashing titles are available to buy from the 25th of January, either directly from Titan Comics or a plethora of good comic retailers.
Assassin’s Creed: Templars #9
Crafted by Dennis Calero, Assassin’s Creed: Templars #9 is the final issue in the Templars story. The ending is satisfying and leaves the possibility for more stories surrounding these characters but the artwork isn’t nearly as breathtaking as some of the previous issues. It’s well worth the read, especially if you’re invested in the lore of Assassin’s Creed.
Dark Souls Winter’s Spite #3.3
For those unfamiliar with the Dark Souls video games series, if you like Game of Thrones and zombies, then this is the comic for you. It’s a dark, gritty storyline written by George Mann and fantastic artwork by Alan Quah. Luckily, this series isn’t very far in so there’s plenty of time to catch up on the story. The story also pays small homages to the video games series but knowing the series is not a requirement for this story. It has plenty of undead violence and is worth looking into.
World War X #2
Aliens are trying to take over the Earth and it’s up to an immortal being named Helius to save us. While this comic is definitely a good read if you’re a fan of alien takeover stories, the hero of the story Helius is at times the least interesting part of the story. In fact, the sense of mystery surrounding side characters that are introduced in this issue tend to steal the show for this particular issue. And, while the aliens are cool, the drama that is set up with these new characters proves for a more interesting plot. Both Jerry Frissen’s writing and Peter Snejbjerg’s art will intrigue anyone a fan of the genre to continue reading.
Masked #3
Masked #3 will remind its audience of a good, old fashioned comic book hero story while at the same time providing a modern flair. It’s a classic origin story with an interesting set of colorful characters and provides enough of a originality that it feels fresh. The writing, by Serge Lehman, is particularly good and Stephane Crety’s art really brings the character’s to life.
The Mummy #3
The Mummy #3 offers an interesting story with a very intriguing protagonist. The complexities of Angel’s character are only seen briefly in this issue but enough information is given in the story that allows the audience to genuinely root for her. And, it’s her character dynamic alone that will make this story very interesting in terms of where it chooses to go. The type of character that Angel is can either be a huge success or a huge flop and I’m curious to see where it goes. The artwork, by Ronilson Friere, is absolutely beautiful and writer Peter Milligan gives a great twist at the end of this issue.
Warhammer 40,000: Will of Iron #4
It goes without saying that the artwork for Warhammer 40,000 is absolutely beautiful. Tazio Bettin uses harsh shadows masterfully and his balance of cool and warm tones throughout the piece is stunning. While I can’t say the story will suck a new reader in, George Mann does an excellent job of keeping faithful readers engaged and tension high in this issue.
Doctor Who Twelfth Doctor Vol. 5: The Twist
If you’ve been waiting eagerly for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor to return, then reading this story will surely temporarily satisfy you. We’re back with the Twelfth Doctor and his love for guitars as he teams up with a punk rock bass player to solve a murder mystery. It has plenty of the lovable quirkiness of the Doctor that we know and love but also is a genuine mystery with a plot twist that only a comic can execute. Written by George Mann and art by Rachael Stott and Mariano Laclaustra, this is one that any Doctor Who fan should check out.
Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor Vol. 6: Sins of the Father
The Tenth Doctor is always a favorite amongst fans and this series of stories is no exception. If this comic has proven anything, it’s that Doctor Who as a whole needs more variety in terms of the dynamics between companions. There are so many types of relationships to explore with the companions and this volume gives us a breath of fresh air. The story focuses on two friends Gabby Gonzalez and Cindy Wu as they travel with the Doctor to 1920s New Orleans and face difficult, emotional realities of traveling through space and time. Written by Nick Abadzis and art by Giorgia Sposito and Eleonora Carlini, this read offers fresh, colorful characters with gut wrenching emotional turmoil.
