I Am Baby Groot!

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming out at the beginning of May (May 5th to be exact), fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are very excited to see what’s in store for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot. Considering that they have to save the Universe again, the Guardians are probably going to be getting into a whole ton of trouble.

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, it was undeniable that Groot was a fan-favorite and the most heroic of the Guardians. Groot, in a self-sacrificing move that had many in tears for the alien tree that can only say “I am Groot,” (with different inflections that mean different things, so one you get used to him, you know what he’s saying) used his abilities to protect the others in the battle against Ronan the Accuser.

But he didn’t die because Rocket planted what was left of Groot and as we see at the after-credits scene, Baby Groot was alive and well. Coming into the second Guardians movie, it had been two-to-three months since the first movie. Baby Groot is basically not a baby, more like a kid. He’s more rambunctious and just younger. Baby Groot from the trailers is obviously very naïve, not really understanding what was going on, I think.

Immediately, I can tell that Rocket and Baby Groot are as close as ever, with Rocket taking on the big brother/caretaker role for the smaller and younger Groot instead of the other way around as seen in the first movie. Rocket and Groot’s conversations are awesome, especially the “Do not push this button!” one from Trailer 2. The others also take on the same role for Baby Groot.  We have Star-Lord saying such a dad-thing like “Groot, put on your seatbelt!”  Also, we have Gamora trying to shoo Baby Groot off the battlefield while he’s just standing there waving innocently at her.

The biggest question I have is whether or not that Baby Groot retained the memories from before. Also, is it the same Groot, just reborn? Or is he the older Groot’s offspring? Director James Gunn said that Groot didn’t have the memories, but we’ll see how that works out in the film.

Vin Diesel will once again voice the character in the second movie as he did in the first. And he has on occasion spoken about how Groot will be different than the Groot from the first movie.  The younger aspect of Groot will definitely be the most fun. Baby Groot is not going to be doing a lot of fighting (but a little, and be fierce about too) in this movie, since he’s so tiny, obviously. I can sense a lot of shenanigans from Baby Groot to come.

Honestly, I can see that we are going to be watching Groot grow up again through the MCU. With the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War, I am maybe sensing that we get a teenaged Groot sometime soon! But for now, Baby Groot is adorable, naively funny, and just plain awesome. There are a lot of good things to come for Baby Groot—especially to dispel any negative feelings of the team trying to work together.
