Top 6 Little Moments from Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer #2

Explosions. Gruesome battles fought with rocket launchers and spider webs. A rich man projecting his guilt onto a teenage boy. These are the makings of the second trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming. But mixed in between all the action and drama lies smaller moments. Smaller in scale then say, waging war while on the outside of a flying airplane. Moments a detail-orientated freak would squeal with delight over, hypothetically speaking of course. Moments of unexpected humor, organic cameos or world (or in the case of Marvel, universe) building that doesn’t feel overwhelming. Is it not the little moments that bring audiences back for more?

With that said, here are the top six little moments from the second trailer of Spider-Man: Homecoming:

6. Happy, Happy Joy Joy

It’s not even that I’m a particularly big fan of Happy. It’s admittedly hard to pop in a Marvel movie without a flashy costume or superhuman ability/suit of armor. The most interesting aspect of Happy prowling around Tony Stark for a hot second was just that – it was a moment; a blink and you’ll miss it glimpse. It was a subtle way to include other characters from the Marvel Universe into Homecoming. Hopefully, this marks a tide changing at Marvel Studios, of blending characters into other movies rather than shoving them in. I bet Nick Fury and Black Widow are still nursing sores from being shoehorned into Iron Man 2.

5. Peter Parker Unmasked (Yet Again)

Spider-man unmasked

This may be personal preference at its finest, but one of the best, unintended running gags in the Spider-Man film series is Peter Parker pulling his mask off. Frequently. And usually at the worst possible moment. Whether he’s talking down a villain down from bringing New York City into oblivion or convincing his girlfriend’s dad not to shoot on sight, Spider-Man loves ripping his mask off almost as much as fighting crime. It’s a welcomed sight to see that the second trailer does not dare to drop that Spider-Man quirk.

4. Avengers Assemble?

Tony advises young Parker other people can handle the likes of a guy flying around like a bird. But are there really? Last time audiences saw the Avengers, it was a grim sight to behold. It was cool and visually stunning to watch the Avengers beat the crap out of each other, but still. At the end of Captain America: Civil War, most of the Avengers were either not there or on Team Cap, and most likely won’t be rejoining any time soon. That leaves Tony Stark to rebuild on his own, still paying the piper from the last movie. The Avengers tower is shown, but is anyone actually home?

3. Friend Ned

spidey's friend ned

From watching not even thirty seconds of this character, it’s clear Ned is a better best friend than Harry Osborne could ever hope to be. And he has more personality, meaning more than your average piece of vengeful dry toast. Ned stands a little too close for comfort. He has a cute secret handshake with Peter. He awes and oohs over Peter’s secret without getting becoming too much of a fan-boy. Both trailers for Homecoming have promised to show more of Peter Parker’s personal and school life. With this kid headlining, he’ll surely be the comic relief of the film without being too distracting.

2. Captain America’s Fitness Challenge

Captain America: the first Avenger; secret agent of Hydra; motivational gym class hero. In another instance of Marvel slipping characters into the film, Captain America has a challenge for the youth of America. His mission: to have 1940’s youngsters, and Peter’s modern day gym class, be mindful of their physical health. I’m insanely curious what a Captain America fitness challenge entails. Does the cool-down period actually involve being frozen? Here’s hoping for a cheesy, over-the-top video.

1. Zendaya Reading in Gym Class

This moment was so small it wasn’t even the focus of the scene it was in. But there Zendaya’s Michelle sits, during Cap’s fitness challenge video, reading an early twentieth century novel. You know, just casual reading. I can’t place which is more amusing – the fact she’s reading in gym class to begin with, or what she’s reading. It must be an unwritten law in the land of Hollywood that if you’re going to have a nerdy character, you have to go all in. I’ve met my fair share of smarty-pants high schoolers, and absolutely none of them would lug that huge-ass book around for some light reading. Even if they were deeply passionate about the book. I think she’s fake reading it.
