The Flash and Supergirl had a crossover episode on March 21, 2017. Entitled “Duet” (The Flash 3×17), the episode was also musical.
Normally, I think that musical episodes in otherwise serious shows, like the two Arrowverse shows, is a cheap gimmick to get more viewers watching. It’s not to say that I don’t like musicals, but I never go out of my way to watch one. That being said, I totally enjoyed “Duet,” especially after the less than stellar past few episodes of each of their respective shows that frankly I fast forward through most of just to get to the end.
After Music Meister traps both Kara/Supergirl and Barry/Flash in a musical mind-coma, they have to figure out how to get out of the nightmare without their powers. It was all very heartwarming and I love when Supergirl and Flash team-up, because they balance each other well. (To see a breakdown of the episode, check out the full review).
Being that it was an epic episode, here are 6 best moments, in my opinion, from the Flash/Supergirl Musical Crossover.
6. Vibe, Kid Flash, and Martian Manhunter Team Up
In a non-musical portion of the episode, Vibe, Kid Flash and Martian Manhunter team-up to track down Music Meister to undo what he did to Kara and Barry. Cisco’s surprise that Hank was, in fact, an alien was hilarious. The team-up, most important, for Kid Flash was the first true outing since he was rescued from the Speed Force. Kid Flash had been dealing with being afraid and the whole conflict with Music Meister helped him alleviate his fears somewhat to make him an effective crime-fighter again.
5. “More I Cannot Wish You”
To say that Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn), and Victor Garber (Martin Stein) could sing and dance would be an understatement. The ensemble song with them singing “More I Cannot Wish You” directed at the Iris doppelganger and Mon-El doppelganger was imbued with fatherly concern and love. Honestly, it was just really neat song and it was so strange (but in a good way) seeing normally very serious characters like them dancing and singing like nobody’s business.
4. Music Meister’s Lesson “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”
The song “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” should have given away the entirety of Music Meister’s plans to be benign, but like Barry and Kara, we didn’t get the hint. The whole musical was a lesson in love for Barry and Kara, who had been having love troubles with Iris and Mon-El, respectively. The song that they sang should have made them think. I mean, with a name like Music Meister and whamming people into musicals, how evil could the guy be? It’s just another way that the actors showed off their singing and dancing skills.
3. “Super Friend” Duet
The song “Super Friend” (written by Rachel Bloom) is basically the cementing song of Barry and Kara’s friendship. I was slightly worried with all the crossovers that there might be some hinting of a Barry/Kara romantic relationship, but I am pleased that they are happily just friends. Honestly, I knew that Grant Gustin was in Glee (I never watched that show), so I assumed that he could sing rather well especially after the karaoke thing back in Season 1. But I was oblivious to Melissa Benoist being in Glee too. The song was awesome—it was catchy and just plain awesome. You felt the fondness and camaraderie between Gustin and Benoist.
2. True Love’s Kiss
Cheesy, but well-played, as Iris and Mon-El save Barry and Kara, respectively. Iris and Mon-El were teased by Music Meister about their loves, but in the end both decided to hop into the musical mind-world created by Kara and Barry’s troubles to give them True Love’s Kiss (which I’m surprised Disney hasn’t trademarked). Honestly, it was all very sweet and proved that Barry has a problem shouldering everyone’s problems and doesn’t ask for help and that Kara takes everything so hard on herself that sometimes she doesn’t see what she does to other people. To their credit, Iris and Mon-El take everything in stride.
1. “Runnin’ Home To You”
If the above, True Love’s Kiss didn’t have you ‘awwing,’ then I dare you not to get a little choked up when Barry/Gustin started singing “Runnin’ Home to You.” Not only was the song written by the same writers as the songs in La La Land, but it’s obviously written for the Barry/Iris relationship. If I were DC, I keep that song in reserve, but no only does the song fit perfectly the relationship of Barry and Iris in the Arrowverse, but also fits in all the other iterations of the couple from the comics to Young Justice. Nice to hit me right in the feels, Barry (And way to set the bar high, buddy).
It was a super heart-warming episode. The best part of it was that it didn’t ignore continuity from previous episodes to be a stand-alone episode. It also moved the romance portion of the plots of both Supergirl and The Flash over the long and trouble hump. The episode fit in the tone of the two series too, because I can’t see Stephen Amell‘s Oliver Queen singing and dancing. Check out the episode if you already haven’t or watch it again.
