Summer is officially here, which means the primary television season has come to a close. The season brought with it the return of beloved superheroes, a heckuvalot of robots, and enough villains to make our heads spin. To celebrate another year of awesome, nerdy, super television, AP2HYC is hosting our third annual TV Awards! After months spent reviewing and recapping your (and our!) favorite shows, the AP2HYC writers have selected the best of the best to compete for victory in the 2017 TV Awards. We all love the distinctive voices of our favourite shows, and it takes a team of talented writers, working collaboratively, to breathe life into our beloved characters. Occasionally a specific episode really shines, and here are a few of those that really impressed us:
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 4×15 “Self Control”
Shock reveals, callbacks, action sequences, and real emotion; “Self Control” had it all. Jed Whedon made sure fans had plenty to speculate about over the mid-season hiatus when he wrote this psychological thriller of an episode.
Arrow 5×13 “The Spectre of the Gun”
In a season that brought the show back to its former glory, this episode was a clear stand-out. The flashbacks showing how Rene became Wild Dog were harrowing and the debate about gun control was presented in an incredibly balanced way. The Arrow writers don’t usually take on hot button issues, but this episode did it in magnificent style.
Supernatural 12×11 “Regarding Dean”
Meredith Glynn‘s fantastic script really showcased Jensen Ackles‘s star quality, as Sam had to save his cursed brother from forgetting everything he knew. By turns laugh-out-loud funny and tear-jerking, “Regarding Dean” episode became an instant fan favourite.
Luke Cage 1×04 “Step in the Arena”
Most people agree that Luke Cage peaked early, and this episode is it at its height. The origin of Luke Cage was a suprisingly engaging tale of a man wrongly accused of a crime trying to do the right thing. The fights in the prison were intense, but even more than that was the crazy scene in which Luke gets his powers. “Step in the Arena” answered a lot of lingering questions from Jessica Jones and showed that the writers really did understand Luke’s character.
The Flash 3×01 “Flashpoint”
Hinted at all the way back in the Season 1 finale, we finally got the payoff in this year’s season premiere, “Flashpoint“. Obviously the on-screen Flashpoint diverged greatly from the comics version, but that didn’t stop this from being a heck of an episode. The changes the writers made were really clever, especially making Iris and Wally a crime-fighting sibling duo. The episode is topped by an amazing appearance by Eobard Thawne and had a lasting impact on the whole season.
Supergirl 2×19 “Alex”
Alex has been one of the real standout characters on Supergirl this season, getting more character development than anyone else. From coming to terms with her sexuality to forming a deep relationship with Maggie, Alex has come a long way. And this episode really showed just how much of an impact she has on the lives of the other characters. Couple that with some intense interrogations and some great twists, and you’ve got a stellar episode on your hands!
