REVIEW: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×18 “All Roads Lead…”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. got the gears turning RE: the ominous situation involving the Destroyer of Worlds and seemed to indicate that young Robin’s prophecies might still come true despite Coulson and Co.’s best efforts. “All Roads Lead…” brought the team one step closer to the ill-fated end of the world. With tensions running high, and fractures within the team continuing to emerge, it’ll take a helluvalot to break the time loop and prevent Earth’s predicted demise.

Spoilers ahead!

Despite Coulson’s return, Daisy is still taking command and leading S.H.I.E.L.D. in her own way. After relegating Mack, Coulson, and Deke to base-duty, Daisy and May head out to infiltrate Hale’s Hydra base. The duo take out a handful of hydra goons without batting an eye, largely due to their respective “pent-up emotion,” but are surprised when Hale appears happy to surrender. While May and Daisy don’t buy the Hydra leader’s submission, they begin to when she reveals that Ruby has tracked down the particle accelerator with the full intention of using it, and the Gravitonium, on herself. If that weren’t incentive enough, Hale then informs May and Daisy that FitzSimmons are on the base as well… and will likely be killed by Ruby the second she gets what she wants.

Something that is confirmed back in England as Ruby starts using the science duo as target practice to force them into fixing the machine. While S.H.I.E.L.D’s brightest do their utmost to stall, they are quickly found out by von Strucker and promptly pummeled to the ground by Ruby until they agree to give it their best effort. They get the machine working and Ruby doesn’t hesitate to hop on and fulfill her perceived destiny.

Unsurprisingly, things don’t exactly go according to plan.

Ruby immediately begins freaking out once in the chamber and is only able to absorb 8% of the gravitonium before screaming for the machine to be shut down. Just as Fitz is able to turn the accelerator off, May, Daisy, and Hale run into the room. Ruby is released from the accelerator, momentarily unconscious before she floats on out, hits the floor, and agonizes over the new voices in her head. When Werner moves to comfort her, Ruby’s powers become clear as she accidentally kills him.

Things get worse when she begins to further lose control of her powers, encouraged by the dueling voices of Quinn and Hall. As Daisy and Hale try to talk Ruby down, YoYo runs in and pieces together what has happened. While Ruby and her mother have a much-needed heart-to-heart, the former suddenly falls to the ground, throat slit. Yoyo, fueled by a combined desire for revenge and wish to save the world, killed young Hale with her own blade.

Something that Daisy is none-too-pleased about… especially when Ruby’s deceased body then rises in the air and emits a gravitonium-filled blast that sends anyone in the immediate area to the ground.

While Yoyo claims her actions, “just saved the world,” it looks as though they more likely ended it…

Which is confirmed by a tag that has Hale transporting herself back to her alien friend and giving him the go ahead to unleash havoc on Earth. After all, her world is already gone.

Uh-oh. Hell hath no fury like a Hale woman scorned.
