Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 6 Trailer Brings the Team Into A Civil War

The trailer for Voltron: Legendary Defender sixth season recently came out. For those of you who don’t know, Voltron: Legendary Defender is a DreamWorks produced Netflix series based on the hit 1984 anime called Voltron:  Defender of the Universe (the English dub, at least).  After two full seasons of 12-to-13 episodes, Seasons 3-6 are basically half-seasons with 5-to-7 episodes each. Season 6 is the second part to Season 5. You can check out Season 6’s trailer here and plenty of more content from DreamWorks about Voltron here.

Spoilers up ahead if you haven’t seen Seasons 1-5!

The trailer opened with a bang with Princess Allura and Lotor, the new Galra Emperor, narrating about the fight that is coming. During Season 5, Lotor and Team Voltron managed to defeat Emperor Zarkon after his 10,000 year reign.  This left Lotor to fight for his rightful spot and become Emperor. However, in doing so, the Galra Empire splintered into factions creating a new problem for Voltron–a civil war.

I’m still in the mindset to not trust Lotor, especially since he has a great interest in Altean alchemy and quintessence (the life force or some such in Voltron) near to the obsessive-level of his mother who became the witch Haggar from overexposure to said quintessence. The fact is the trailer tells me that Lotor is definitely using Team Voltron and their duty to protect the universe in his favour.

In other news, Keith, the former Red Paladin and former Black Paladin, returns to the Castle of Lions.  He will be probably have an unexpected role in this season. After joining the Blade of Mamora and finding his mother, the hot-headed former Paladin will have a lot to deal with this season. Keith is a fan-favorite. Since Keith is based off of the original main character of Akira, who was essentially the leader/hero of Team Voltron in the anime of 1980s, current Keith had a lot more development than other characters for that reason.

An old enemy appears as a threat–Sendak, a Galran general, who was the main baddie of Season 1 (other than Zarkon). He is seen on-screen on the Black Lion touting threats. The Galra Civil War will bring out every conniving and cunning enemy out of the works to fill the hole that Zarkon left. Those absent from the trailer are the witch Haggar and Lotor’s former female generals.  It’s possible that they won’t be in this half-season and will be the threat in Season 7 or 8. The war itself will take its toll on Team Voltron–Green Paladin Pidge, Keith’s mother Krolia, and the pilot-lion duos are all in varying degrees in the short clips during the trailer.

Season 5 was a lot of build-up, so I suspect that Season 6 will be more action and move the story along at a faster rate. DreamWorks is very good at keeping the Voltron trailers vague for a variety of reasons, but mostly include the very volatile internet fandom of this series.

There are a lot of questions left to be answered, especially concerning the Black Paladin Shiro (who I suspect is a clone or being used to spy on the Team for Haggar) and what exactly is Lotor up to? In the meantime, wait for season 6 which premiere on Netflix on June 15th.

What did you think of the trailer? Were you also annoyed that they waited a week before Season 6 to release the trailer? Let us know what you think about this trailer and Voltron: Legendary Defender.  Sound off in the comments or send us your thoughts on Facebook or Twitter!
