There are few comic creators that AP2HYC has followed as long as Rachael Smith, and with good reason! Rachael continues to be one of the most talented creators in the UK and consistently delivers high-quality comics that we can’t help but love.
Her latest project – Nap Comix: First Steps – is currently funding on Kickstarter. Read the full press release below.
Nap Comix: First Steps, the Follow-up to Rachael Smith’s Award-Nominated Nap Comix, Is Now Funding On Kickstarter.
This new, autobiographical graphic novel is a love letter to the weirdness and wonderfulness of children just starting to find their own voice.
Nap Comix: First Steps explores Rachael’s son Henry becoming his own person. He walks! He talks! He has some strong opinions on…everything! This book is a heart-warming, heartbreaking, hilarious collection of diary comics about being a mum by award-winning writer-artist Rachael Smith. This book follows on from Rachael’s book Nap Comix – but you do not need to have read that book to enjoy this one.
People ask me what new comics I’m reading. I’ll be honest, Nap Comix is the only comic I read for true pleasure these days. It’s filling a hole that once contained Doonesbury, Posy Simmonds and Giles. Stories that reflect the real world and make it funny and charming and touching. Genius. – Kev Sutherland (The Beano)
British Book Award and Harvey Award nominee Rachael Smith is renowned for making people feel less alone through her comics and so when she became a mother it was a natural progression for Rachael to record the highs and lows in delightful comic strips. The result was Nap Comix, short strips which Rachael made while Henry was napping and posted online. So many people related to Rachael’s comics that she decided to make a book. The first Nap Comix collection featured the best of those early strips, covering Henry’s first year. Now Nap Comix: First Steps continues the story where it begins to get interesting in exciting new ways…
Nap Comix: First Steps is 200 pages long, which includes all the webcomics from the second year of Henry’s life, as well as around 40 pages of book-exclusive content. The book also includes Rachael’s viral comic about her miscarriage, which helped thousands of people feel less alone with their own struggles.
When I posted the miscarriage comic [titled The End of June] there was such an outpouring of love and empathy. Because that comic helped so many people it remains the single piece of work I am the most proud of, and I’m really happy that it now has a proper home in Nap Comix: First Steps. – Rachael Smith
The Kickstarter has the book available for £13 plus shipping. There is also the option to add on the first volume of Nap Comix, if you missed it, as well as exclusive prints, commissions, and sketches.
