After our recent worries that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might be over-packed – Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti as Electro and The Rhino, not to mention Chris Cooper and Dale DeHaan as potential Green Goblins, Norman and Harry Osborn – Emma Stone has stepped up to champion Marc Webb‘s upcoming sequel.
In a recent interview with Cineplex Magazine, Stone stated that the script is “very, very good”, as well as that she “hope[s] they continue letting Gwen be heroic”. However, with Mary Jane making her first appearance in the rebooted series in the form of Shailene Woodley, it’s been rumored that Gwen Stacey might not be around much longer.
Famously killed off in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 when the first Green Goblin dropped her off the George Washington Bridge, Emma Stone may have alluded to her character’s death when she said, “It’ll be cool in the next one to see how Gwen and Peter bridge that distance that was between us at the end of it”, though with this many villains (and potential villains) there are many different ways it could go. In addition, fans will remember that the scene was already recreated, albeit without a death, in the climax of the original Spider-Man movie, with Mary Jane standing (or rather falling) in for Gwen.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due out on May 2nd, 2014. Whether Gwen Stacey will survive it, of course, remains to be seen.
