TRAILER: Captain America: Civil War Trailer #2

Do you hear that?

It’s the sound of complete and utter silence brought on by everyone’s mouths still being on the floor after that jaw-dropping new trailer for Captain America: Civil War.

Give it a few seconds though. Said silence will soon be filled with the shouted pledging of allegiances to Team Cap and Team Iron Man.

If you’re in the latter camp… I’m sorry but we just can’t be friends anymore. Or at the very least we probably shouldn’t see the latest Russo film together for fear of one of us  getting popcorn dumped on our head during some of the more tense moments.

Divided we fall indeed.

But, it’s not you, it’s me… being on the cooler team with Steve Rogers, Falcon, the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man. Granted, you DO have Black Widow who’s the coolest of them all, and I guess Tony Stark, Vision, War Machine, and Black Panther aren’t exactly lame… but still. CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Anyways, I digress…

OH MY THOR THAT TRAILER!!!!!

We open with a voiceover of Steve saying, “We try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody, but you don’t give up,” as the camera pans to Bucky in his Winter Soldier glory. While seemingly a hopeful statement, there is definitely an ominous undercurrent that stems from the fact that we all know what this film is going to be about.

New York. Washington D.C. Sokovia.

The world is still recovering from the devastating events that took place at each of the above and, as pointed out by Thaddeus Ross, “People are afraid.” This fear clearly means a slew of repercussions for the Avengers and their powered allies and, while Cap doesn’t seem too keen on giving up his moral code for the sake of putting those in power at ease, Tony has different feelings. “We need to be put in check. Whatever form that takes, I’m game.”

It’s understandable that Tony would feel this way considering that much of the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron were the result of his own inventions and general negligence, but Steve isn’t convinced that the new mandates will be an improvement. “I know we’re not perfect, but the safest hands are still our own.”

Then again… immediately after he says this via voiceover, Bucky and Tony clash and, were it not for some seriously protective eyewear, the bullet that fires from the Winter Soldier’s gun would have killed Tony in a second.

As silly as it may sound, one of the largest themes of Captain America: Civil War is the notion of friendship and trust. Where Steve is loyal to Bucky, willing to help him even if it goes against the world’s, and Tony’s, wishes, Tony is loyal to those he feels he has let down. There’s a particularly poignant scene in which Rhodes is shot down from the sky (whether he’s killed or simply knocked out isn’t entirely clear) and we see Tony visibly snap.

From what I can tell, the film will initially just focus on the differences of opinions before an incident causes all hell to break loose. I know for sure that it’ll be something big enough to warrant Tony saying, “I was wrong about you. The whole world was wrong about you,” and later, “You just started a war,” as he pummels Cap in the face.

This film looks as though it will be the epitome of, “Now things are personal,” since friends are becoming foes and loyalties seem to be shifting faster than Quicksilver (RIP Pietro).

Interestingly, though she’s been heavily marketed as siding with Iron Man, Black Widow doesn’t seem to be 100% in support of Tony. At one point in the trailer she hits him with, “I’m not the one that needs to watch their back,” before dramatically walking away and leaving him to stand on the balcony alone. I myself was surprised at the initial reveal of Natasha being Team Iron Man considering the role she played in The Winter Soldier and the respectful friendship she’s developed with Cap over the course of the films, and I’m really interested to see what has her siding with Tony in Civil War.

(Or is she even really siding with him at all?)

In addition to all of the above, the new trailer also gave us an awesome look at a showdown between Bucky and Black Panther, with the former weaving through traffic on a motorcycle as the latter chases him down on foot… tackling him to the ground as Steve tries to keep up. We also got some great shots of Scarlet Witch in an apparent showdown with Vision, Hawkeye shooting an arrow that Ant-Man leaps off of mid-flight, some physical blows between Cap and Crossbones, and all members of both teams clashing in one giant brawl.

And… hmmm… I know I’m forgetting something. There was definitely one more thing… what was it?

Oh yeah…

SPIDER-MAN HAS MADE HIS DEBUT! AND IT LOOKS LIKE HE’S SIDING WITH IRON MAN!

I was already borderline embarrassingly excited to see this film but this trailer has really taken my excitement to an entirely new stratosphere. The Russo brothers are quite possibly the best thing to have happened to the Marvel Universe in sometime (I maintain that CA: The Winter Soldier is the best in the MCU to date) and they have really taken things to a new level with Civil War. It looks so dark, so entertaining, and so dramatic and you best believe that I will be purchasing my ticket to opening night the second I’m finished writing this article.

So, after seeing the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War, are you:
