Powerless Trailer Shows Subversive Fun with the Superhero Genre

Powerless is a show set in the DC Universe that will premiere on NBC, February 2, 2017. Powerless is the comedic look at the lives of average, powerless, non-vigilante employees at an insurance company, Wayne Security, owned by Wayne Enterprises. Starring Vanessa Hudgens, Disney alumni and of HSM fame, as Emily Locke, Director of R&D at Wayne Security, Powerless does look like an interesting premise.

First, the trailer started with Emily Locke looking off in the distance at a superhero raging in the sky, quoting the famous Superman line “What’s that up in the sky? Is it bird? Is it a plane?” Her co-workers, however, ignore her as they put up their umbrella and debris falls on her. One quipped, “You seriously can’t tell a difference between a bird and a plane?” It was funny.

Naturally, there’s some very humorous moments in the trailer. Emily Locke is so happy to be working to help people—she feels that she has a sense of purpose. Overall, it’s definitely going to be cheesy in terms of special effects and tons of cameos from the DC Universe. In terms of plot, though, the trailer doesn’t give anything away other than the basic premise of the show.

Apparently, it doesn’t seem set within the Arrowverse or the DCEU, so they are playing by their own rules. The whole thing is kind of funny. Who doesn’t occasionally think about how the normal average citizen deals with living in a world full of superheroes. There’s one scene in the trailer where a man is coming out of his house, as a train car drops on his car. He doesn’t flip out—he just sighs, like it happened before. Of course, the whole purpose of the R&D Department is to figure out ways to lessen the collateral damage of superhero-supervillain battles.

I’m interested to see how they progress the show. The best part of the show will probably be the tongue-in-cheek humour and the cameos and throwaways. Remember to check it out on Feb. 2 on NBC!
