Cream Maid Is an Adorable Tale of Love and Acceptance

As we continue to shift and shape into the people we are meant to be, it can be difficult for society to accept us from time to time. This example is pure in Cream Maid. Written by Mark Dickson, Cream Maid takes readers on a journey of love, friendship, and acceptance.

This fun comic focuses on a family who hires a lovable little creature named Cream Maid. Cream Maid is an adorable, large cat-like creature sporting a cute maid outfit. With orders given to keep their house neat and tidy, Cream Maid continuously messes up everything it touches. Dishes break, food falls from the table, and soon the family doubts Cream Maid’s ability to assist them at all.

Mark Dickson and artist Rebecca Burgess truly know how to capture the heart of a reader with this simple little comic. At first, I thought I was reading just another cute children’s comic until I realised the subliminal message of acceptance that was spread throughout. The true lesson taught here is to sometimes give people a chance to declare who they are, even if they seem to be difficult at first glance.

Friendship is also a key here. This comic shouts a reminder of how having friends is taken for granted. People that feel they don’t belong in society simply because they feel different is scary enough, but not being able to confide in a single friend is quite possibly the greatest definition of loneliness. Changing who you are as a person to gain admiration from someone you admire often leads to dismay. This comic tells us that we’re all supposed to be ourselves, and through that we will be recognized by our peers.

On a personal level, this specific issue reminded me of why I fell in love with comics in the first place. This community (the comic book readers) always come together with such passion to discuss these great books that we read. Whether it be the simple things, such as the art or plot, or some of the deeper aspects of comic book legends and mythologies that bind these great stories together, the comic book community is the grandest community of all when it comes to making friends and meeting new people.

Never having to pretend to like a specific comic book due to its popularity has always been a great nod to this community’s openness and individualism. Through each of our own tastes, we come together and have the greatest of times. We feel loved by the friends we make, and that love fills the void some of us desperately need in such a judgmental world. Cream Maid proves that.
