Throughout the history of movies, good versus evil is the most basic plot of all, at the root of everything, from war films to comedies. Superhero films take this simple premise to the Nth degree, inventing a fantastical world where the evil guys and good guys have magical powers; the former want to use these to take over the world, while the latter use them to stop them. For movie fans, superhero movie present real-life moral dilemmas, but set against a backdrop where your imagination can escape for hours: perfect for your first date. If you’ve met someone on a dating site or in more traditional offline setting, watching movies together would be a perfect idea. Here’s the top five for you to watch with someone you’ve connected on a dating platform according to internal poll conducted by this site.
The Dark Night (2008)
There have been many versions of the classic Batman story since he was first created by DC artists back in 1939, and several films. But this is considered by many to be the benchmark. While Joaquin Phoenix stole the show in the recent prequel, Joker, it was the late Heath Ledger who first grabbed the limelight in this earlier outing as Batman’s nemesis. His portrayal of the lurid villain stands out against the film’s dark and gritty tones, while the director, Chris Nolan, is one of the best in the business. Not one of his projects has been poorly received – and neither will this one on your first date.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
If either you or your date is new to superheroes, this is one classic example of the genre that will introduce you to an ensemble cast of many principal characters at once. The all-star cast includes Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. There’s never a dull moment as the action sweeps across the screen, and this is one superhero film that balances the incredibly fast-paced action with tear-jerking emotion. Ideal for date night.
The Incredibles (2004)
Pixar studios have produced many outstanding animated features, including Toy Story and Up. But this movie crosses over into the superhero universe to create a unique spectacle, and one with a positive message. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl have amazing abilities, as do their kids, but they spend as much time cautioning the latter about misusing their powers as harnessing them. By the end of the story, after numerous enthralling adventures – for moviegoers of all ages – they realize the key is to entrust their young charges with those powers.
Black Panther (2018)
The first MCU film to feature a black actor in its lead role (Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away from cancer, aged 43), this received plaudits from fans and critics alike. Grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide, it is the highest-grossing film with a black director, and is currently in the top 10 of the most lucrative movies of all time. You and your partner will quickly understand why.
Iron Man (2008)
Played with his customary blend of cynicism and tongue-in-cheek humor, Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man is another titular superhero worthy of inclusion in your first date top five. Firstly, there are the special effects. Iron Man’s armor suit is capable of so many captivating actions, including the ability to produce an array of weapons and to fly. The cinematography involving his POV as he swoops over landscapes, urban and rural, will have you both perched on the edge of your seats. But he is also willing to put his life on the line for what he perceives as the greater good of humankind. The ultimate avenger? He certainly comes close.
