Guide to Your New Year’s Eve: Top 6 Superhero Movies to Watch Drunk

While New Year’s Eve is a huge global holiday, along with St. Patrick’s Day, this is a night that a lot of people do not remember. Still, for those of you that want to have one less drink this year, sitting down with an entertaining superhero movie is never a bad idea. So here are six great movies to watch while drunk/under the influence.

6. Batman & Robin (1997)

Ok, let’s get the controversial picks out of the way. The first two movies on this list are anything but “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Before I start to explain, let me just say one thing about the great Joel Schumacher. If the first image that comes to your mind when I mention Joel Schumacher is “bat nipples” your homework is to watch The Lost Boys ASAP. Anyway, this movie has an element of “so bad that it’s good” that is impossible to ignore.

A beer might not be enough to get through a movie like this (not encouraging binge-drinking by any means). But the bat nipples, Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy? There’s a lot to like when you don’t take this movie seriously. If you can’t do that and you’re expecting a Tim Burton Batman-like film, this can be the worst movie experience ever. Don’t do that, go into this movie thinking that you’re watching a film like The Room, bring a glass of wine, and you’ll enjoy this more than you’ll care to admit.

5. Hancock (2008)

This is a very unique film. It has two of the biggest names in Hollywood as co-stars and did well at the box office. Still, Hancock has become somewhat of a forgotten superhero film. But upon rewatch, it’s pretty entertaining. And Will Smith is very funny as the alcoholic anti-hero. I may be one of the few who thinks that Smith and Charlize Theron‘s chemistry is fun to watch. Especially when they begin to use their superpowers against one another.

Nevertheless, Hancock has a lot of flaws. I didn’t even remember the villain until I rewatched the film again. And there’s a certain scene that can be either hilarious or completely disgusting depending on the viewer. But there’s a weirdness to the film that I can embrace. It just might depend on my mood…and sometimes my blood-alcohol content.

4. Doctor Strange (2016)

There are a few MCU movies that warrant spots on this. And the sequel to this film in 2022 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will probably surpass the original in terms of trippiness. The combination of more multiverse traveling and Sam Raimi makes that a certainty. After all, Army of Darkness is one of the best movies ever to watch while drunk.

Still, Doctor Strange is a compelling adventure that includes brilliant special effects and time manipulation sequences. Other dimensions are revealed as well as the astral plane and, honestly, the two-minute fight sequence between The Ancient One and Kaecilius is enough to merit a spot. So instead of falling over from too many Bloody Mary’s this New Year’s Eve watch Stephen Strange fall off a cliff and change his life forever.

3. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

This film is visually trippy as well as hilarious. And there are also some very weird scenes that fit with what the movie is going for. I thought I was drunk when I heard Hulk speaking English for the first time in the MCU. Also, this movie will make you love Jeff Goldblum even more than you already did.

And in the second act, you basically have Bruce Banner recovering from a two-year hangover as the Hulk. Loki is also very entertaining throughout the movie. You never know when he’s going to betray Thor next. Overall, everything that happens on Sakaar needs to be watched in both a drunken and sober state of mind. You know you have a crazy movie when Hulk fighting a giant wolf to “The Immigrant Song” is just another scene. Definitely a great movie to watch when New Year’s Eve swings into gear.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

If Star Wars didn’t exist, this might be the ultimate space action/adventure flick. A movie that surprised a lot of people, Guardians of the Galaxy is a no-brainer to watch while drunk. The humor, the action, the visuals, the planets, a dance-off finale, this movie was made for New Year’s Eve. The film could have been awful and still a great 2 AM watch for how ridiculous it is if you have no idea what the plot is going in.

With a great cast that includes my favorite professional wrestler growing up, Dave Bautista, we see the Guardians either separately or together get in and out of trouble throughout the film. While we’ve seen scruples of it in previous films, this is really the first time we are able to experience the galaxy. In short, Guardians of the Galaxy is a terrific introduction to what’s to come for an entirely new side of the MCU. Oh, and yeah, it’s a great movie to watch while drunk on New Year’s Eve.

1. Deadpool (2016)

In the end, the clear number 1. I’d fire myself if I didn’t put this film on the list. I can’t even think of a better movie in any genre from the past decade to watch while drunk. Maybe Project X? Eh probably not, that movie can sometimes be hit-or-miss. I saw someone on Reddit mention What We Do in the Shadows. Now that’s a terrific film and definitely deserves some consideration for a list outside the superhero genre. Still, I wouldn’t put it ahead of Deadpool.

This is the role that Ryan Reynolds was born to play as the foul-mouthed, serial killing, practically immortal anti-hero. It’s very nice to see a movie with such a crazy origin having the luxury of the R-rating. Because they make the most of it. Along with the sequel, this movie knows exactly when to make fun of itself and the entire superhero genre. The “where’s Francis” scene is probably the funniest two minutes in superhero movie history. This is a terrific film to watch going into the new year, especially while a little tipsy.
