R.J. Collins and Holly Cameron return with the next edition of Arks #2! With its incredibly detailed digital 3D art, Arks #2 tells the continuing story of Joe and Lilith. These two are planetary engineers that have landed on a terraformed world orbiting a distant star. They have to survive on this unknown planet with an unfamiliar biosphere. All the while, the two attempt to record and observe their findings for their mission of a past life that they will most likely never return to.
Collins covers the script, story, and art while Cameron and Collins also producing Arks #2. Published by Clicky Sprout Wife; the team of Andrew Morris, James Daly, and Neil Copland create visually stunning 3D art in all of its graphic glory. Lucy Crompton, Holly Cameron, and Shann Biglione on the other hand edit the story, providing audience further details on Lilith and Joe’s past and present. This all all leads to a climactic conclusion, leaving audience on the edge of their seat for Arks #3.
#2 explores the drastic measures Joe and Lilith have to resort to as Joe’s slow death renders him in need of urgent care. The only place where our protagonist has a chance at survival lies within a site called the Cradle. Located within the most dangerous area of this world, where deadly animals roam about. These animals have been transplanted from Earth and are now more vicious than ever from this entire process.
Joe and Lilith are a husband and wife team. And while some of their memories of the past are a little fuzzy, there definitely is a sense of natural chemistry between the two. Especially as Lilith attempts to conjure up some of Joe’s memories from the past. Still, Lilith is very much focused on the mission, but she does prioritize Joe’s health when he is clearly suffering. This is not an Alien Special Order 937 situation. “Insure return of organism for analysis. All other considerations secondary.” The two protagonists definitely share some kind of love for one another.
But that does not mean that both Lilith’s and Joe’s circumstances are not desperate in Arks Issue #2. Especially since they have no food, no water, and no shelter. Additionally, the two are naked and completely exposed to the adverse conditions around them. Which still has mosquitos in it! The deadliest animal in the world that simply will not leave humanity alone. Even on an extraterrestrial planet. Meanwhile, packs of wolves roam the forests as Lilith and Joe embark on their quest for the Cradle.
Going back to the previous issue, Arks #1 carried with it themes synonymous to the Book of Genesis; Joe and Lilith are representative of Adam and Eve on this newfound planet, exploring an unknown land with a biosphere that they are completely unfamiliar with. But in Adam and Eve’s case, they need guidance from a higher power to learn how to care for themselves. Whereas in the case of Lilith and Joe, there are some clearcut, internal survival instincts that the two possess. Leaving them not so much in need of guidance, but more so time especially with Joe’s injuries.
Still, creaks filled with iron that taste like blood, an ocean that burns their eyes like vinegar, and fires popping up in the weirdest locations are one of the many odd elements the two have to grapple with throughout this comic. Overall, Arks Issue #2 is an exhilarating journey that’s beautiful 3D art brings its characters and this world to life. I certainly recommend that you check this out. Maybe not if you’re a kid. A compliment to how good and how much the 3D art shows.
