Introduction
So, Captain Marvel is almost here! The first MCU female-led superhero movie stars Brie Larson as the titular Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990’s and follow said hero as she joins Starforce of the Kree, along with battling against Skrulls. The trailers thus far look pretty intriguing. The vagueness of the trailers towards the plot make me want to see this movie very much. It’s going to be the second-to-last MCU Phase Three movie and one movie before Avengers: Endgame.
It’s almost as if Marvel planned it this way so we all HAVE TO see Captain Marvel before Avengers:Â Endgame. But I’m just saying… Clearly, Marvel Studios is definitely setting her up to replace Captain America’s role as team leader of the Avengers.
Time Travel in the MCU
With Captain Marvel being set in the 1990’s, the only conclusion one can draw about where she was during the entirety of the MCU thus far (since Iron Man) is time travel shenanigans (She could have been off Earth but then why was there no mention of her in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies especially if she was in Starforce?). And, if Captain Marvel is going to be doing some time hopping, it might explain a lot more than just where she was, but why she found herself with the Kree and with her powers. It might be a bigger part of her movie too. Perhaps she had a bigger role in the MCU but just quietly existed all this time, just out of sight. Hmmm….
Since time travel is clearly possible within the context of the MCU and Captain Marvel will be in Avengers: Endgame, time travel will have something to do with Avengers: Endgame too. After all, Doctor Strange used the Time Stone to defeat Dormammu in his movie and Thanos then used the Time Stone to reverse the destruction of Vision by Wanda in Avengers: Infinity War. Using time travel to win is not new. Therefore, between Ant-Man’s micro-verse stuff and Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame as the possible time travel agent, they might be two of the most important characters in the April Marvel movie. The remaining Avengers are desperate to find a solution to the Snap and bring Thanos down. If time travel and traversing a mirco-verse is what it takes, they’ll do it.
Ramifications
The possible ramifications in the MCU as a whole with Captain Marvel’s time travel exploits might fix old problems with the MCU. The MCU does have its fair share of continuity errors, especially concerning ages of certain characters and time-skips and placements of the movies on the MCU timeline. Such things as the assassination of Stark parents’, the timeline placement of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the real origins of the Infinity Gauntlet, and Gamora’s two origins (half killed or all killed, which is it?) are some more continuity errors. Can these be some of the things fixed by Captain Marvel?
But as any sci-fi fan will tell you–time travel always causes problems, so I suspect that we might see some actions of Captain Marvel in her movie, whilst Avengers: Endgame will have ramifications much later and cause more problems. Anything in the next couple of movies could also set up the MCU integration of the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four for later rebooted movies. Histories and relationships could get retconned or small, seemingly insignificant details might be changed that could alter an entire character. Marvel Studios has to play the whole time travel deal closely or it could ruin the connectivity of the MCU.
Conclusion
The possibilities of Captain Marvel time travel shenanigans is a big deal – especially concerning questions plaguing fans. Clearly, she’s been doing some time travel stuff, because I doubt she would have just left the Avengers to play hero while she didn’t do anything, that’s not Captain Marvel’s style, unless she was not in the present. Time travel is always an iffy ploy in writing but if done will, it could change everything. Or it might break the continuity? Who knows at this point since Marvel’s playing it close to the chest with spoilers.
