Avengers: Endgame – Who Else Survived The Snap?

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War has to be one of the most jaw-dropping endings in the history of film. With the snap of his fingers, Thanos wiped out half of life in the universe, leaving the Avengers and audience hollow and defeated. For the past year, we have been biting our nails with anticipation at how Avengers: Endgame will reverse the Snap (or Decimation). Additionally, there has been dread thinking about which other characters from across the MCU either survived or died. Sadly, none of the TV shows, save a mention from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., tied directly into Infinity War. With rumours of a time skip in Endgame, it makes one wonder how certain characters would react post-Snap. Let’s have a little fun and speculate on such concepts.

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Captain Marvel, the various Marvel TV shows, and addresses rumours for Avengers: Endgame, which may or may not actually happen. Read at your own discretion.

Confirmed Survivors and Casualties

The end of Infinity War saw the deaths of half the universe, including many of our favourite heroes. Heimdall, Loki, Gamora, and Vision all died at the hands of Thanos before he snapped his fingers. Afterward, Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Wanda Maximoff, Falcon, Groot, Mantis, Drax, Peter Quill, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Nick Fury, and Maria Hill all turned to dust. In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Ant-Man was trapped in the quantum realm as Hope van Dyne, Hank Pym, and Janet van Dyne died as well.

The character posters for Endgame revealed Shuri has also died, leaving Wakanda without a ruler. Erik Selvig is also confirmed to be dead, contradicting his presence in a junior novel that ties Infinity War to Endgame. Pepper Potts, Happy Hogan, Valkyrie, and Wong were confirmed to have survived the Snap. Comments from the Russo Brothers confirmed both Lady Sif and Betty Ross were dusted, but Aunt May and Howard the Duck lived. And if Endgame is hinting, Hawkeye’s family are goners too.

As for the surviving Avengers – Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Bruce Banner, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, along with Rocket and Nebula. Add in Ant-Man and Carol Danvers, and you have the full line-up for Endgame’s roster for the Avengers. Okoye and M’Baku also survived, though their role remains unknown.

Oh, and Thanos survived. But, what about other characters from across the MCU? Here are a few suggestions on who may have survived, and how they would react to the Snap.

Phil Coulson

Last time we saw Agent Phil Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., he was dying again. The Kree DNA keeping himself alive was removed by Ghost Rider, Loki’s fatal wound slowly killing him. Coulson retired to Tahiti with Melinda May to enjoy his remaining days. But, since the show apparently takes place in time with Infinity War, Coulson’s peace may be cut short. Infinity War’s end was so effective because the characters were seeing their loved ones die. If Coulson survived the Snap, he would witness May die, and perhaps his whole team would be lost. Would Coulson return to duty one last time? Personally, it would be wonderful if Coulson made a surprise appearance in Endgame to motivate the Avengers. Coulson is returning for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s sixth season in some shape, so he may not be dying anytime soon.

Thunderbolt Ross

Thunderbolt Ross’ return in Captain America: Civil War and then in Infinity War was a welcome one. He is a staunch supporter of the Sokovia Accords, and is not willing to give the renegade superheroes a get-out-of-jail card, even when the world is in crisis. Even Ross would be overwhelmed by the Snap, including the loss of his daughter Betty. But, since he is a member of the US Government, and if say the line of succession was decimated, perhaps Ross would become the next President of the United States. A man that unforgiving, paranoid, and controlling would either use his power to kowtow the Avengers, or, give them a wide berth to fix things.

Okoye

Despite being the most notable survivor of Wakanda’s decimation, Okoye’s presence in marketing has been tiny. In fact, Danai Gurira wasn’t even listed on posters until fans complained. Since every surviving Avenger lost someone, it would be strange for Okoye not to be involved in the plot. However, being a loyal member of Dora Milaje, Okoye may be fulfilling her duty in Wakanda, guarding whoever is ruling. Perhaps M’Baku has become king, perhaps even inheriting the role of Black Panther, if the heart-coloured herbs can be grown again.

Cassie Lang

The consequences of the Snap is the spontaneity of death, and everyone is bound to lose someone. And this will likely include children losing their parents. Cute little Cassie Lang, Ant-Man’s daughter, is confirmed to appear in Endgame, but played by 17-year old Emma Fuhrmann, suggesting a recasting. However, it has long been suspected that Endgame will involve some time travel, including into the future. Janet van Dyne’s mention of the quantum realm’s unpredictability alludes to this. Perhaps Scott will escape the realm, either finding some time has passed, or he has been zapped years into the future. Hopes are high that Cassie appears, now using her father’s tech to be a hero named Stature. With half the world gone, new heroes will have to rise.

Ghost

Another question to ask is what happens to Ghost? With all of the Pyms gone, Ant-Man trapped, and, in my headcanon, Bill Foster is dusted too, who will keep Ghost stable? Scott will probably forget all about dropping off the collected energy for Ava, considering what’s happened. Janet did reconstitute her body to allow her an extended reprieve, so perhaps Ava would be alright physically. Emotionally, that is probably a whole other kettle of fish.
