It’s time for the 5th Annual AP2HYC TV Awards!
This year’s TV season brought with it a slew of new heroes and villains, a bevy of bombshells, and enough excitement to tide us over until the Fall. We’ve spent months reviewing, recapping, and OMGing over your favorite (and maybe even least favorite) shows, and now it’s time to put you in the hot seat. Be sure to cast your vote and determine the best-of-the-best of nerdy TV. Which shows will come out on top? Only you can decide!
This year animated TV shows have been coming back with all sorts of new reboots and seasons. From old classic reboots, old favorites returning (here’s looking at you Young Justice) to anime, this season had a lot of great new animated seasons for big kids and little kids alike to enjoy.
RWBY Season 6
After two rather clunky seasons, the sixth volume has been a stupendous ride. Tears have been shed, butts were kicked, minds have been blown, and hearts have shivered. While there were some episodes that dragged along, season 6 ended quite nicely making us look forward to what comes next.
Ultraman
Ultraman is a Japanese daikaiju (big monster) series like the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai (where Power Rangers come from). Remade in various forms, Netflix put out Ultraman, an original anime series. While taking some liberties from the original concepts (which all make the series a bit more modern), Netflix’s Ultraman stays true to the legacy of the overall series.
Young Justice: Outsiders
It’s no secret that the AP2HYC team love Young Justice. Just getting a third season of this show was a gift, and the fact that it didn’t disappointment was the icing on the cake. Excellent writing – both plotting and character development – is easily Young Justice’s biggest strength, with mature stories that can be enjoyed by a range of audiences.
Hell, even the DC-hating Scott loves it. Need we say more?
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Season 1 and Season 2 was truly a magnificent watch. Bringing life into the She-Ra franchise with a modern take on the warrior and her extended group of friends really felt nice. Certainly at times a little preachy, but no less enjoyable with great animation and great lore.
Carmen Sandiego
Unexpected would be a good way to describe Carmen Sandiego. The franchise has never been consistent, either in story, tone, or even format. But this show has taken all the best parts of the character of Carmen and turned her into something new and exciting.
Disenchantment
While at first this show appeared to be nothing more than Futurama transported to a fantasy world, by the end of the first season Disenchantment had shown that Matt Groening really isn’t a two-trick pony, but still has the chops to create compelling characters in a cartoon comedy.
