AP2HYC TV Awards 2019: Best Make-Up

Much like costumes, make-up can often make or break a character. Great make-up is hard to come by, but these shows pulled it off in ways we could only dream of achieving.

Doom PatrolĀ (Season 1)

Larry and Cyborg’s make-up are amazing. Vic’s practical look is far better than the obviously CG look of Justice League, while we get a surprising amount of screen time for Larry’s destroyed and burned face. While it looks like Matt Bomer under all of that fleshy make-up, it could very easily be Matthew Zuk, who plays Larry under the bandages.

The Umbrella Academy (Season 1)

There’s really only one person we’re talking about for The Umbrella Academy make-up department’s biggest success – and it wasn’t even for anything on the face! The way that Luthor’s space-ape body was created just looked fantastic. The hair, the bulk, all of it was a true masterpiece for the UA make-up team.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Seasons 1&2)

The makeup of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was great. Sabrina and her aunt Zelda’s makeup was especially well done. The use of the deep reds and colors really made it eye-catching.

Preacher (Season 3)

While a lot of the make-up is usually pretty minimal (with the exception of Satan himself), Herr Starr’s penis head, All Father’s huge body, and Humperdoo’s…everything add hilarious touches to an already absurd show.

Game of Thrones (Season 7)

The makeup of Game of Thrones was especially well-done. Everything was consistent and made sense as the narrative moved from battle to calmer times.

Swamp Thing (Season 1)

It’s hard to find the line between what is make up and what is costume with Swamp Thing himself, but the make-up on all of the victims in the first few episodes, especially Suzy Coyle is just amazing, and gives a unique look to a unique “disease”.

These contenders are all so different in scale and tone. So which one of these feats of make-up brilliance deserves to take the prize?
