“The Legend of La Mariposa: The Climb and Other Stories” is Loads of Fun!

James Lawrence has brought us more action-packed fun with The Legend of La Mariposa: The Climb and Other Stories! This graphic novel was originally a web comic and has now been brought together into one exciting compilation. These standalone stories follow the adventures of La Mariposa as well as the Sons of Justice. Some of the events do reference the earlier comic, The Demon Gauntlet. However, it is still easy for new readers to hop on board and thoroughly enjoy the content.

Since the graphic novel draws upon the world of Lucha Libre and folklore, the luchadores often encounter mythical creatures on their quests. This includes creatures like chupacabras and the impressive thunderbird shown above. Lawrence offers a unique portrayal of these mythical creatures that can be quite entertaining. This panel is an excellent example of the lively color use that surges from the pages. Lawrence’s art is thrilling and highly contributes to the enjoyable nature of the comic.

The protagonist, La Mariposa, is a rookie luchadora that is full of ambition. As she confronts each new challenge she is growing into her role and faces the obstacles with admirable optimism. Even though she has plenty of strength to spare, La Mariposa does not only rely on brute force to resolve conflict. Instead, she approaches each issue with creative solutions. That is not to say she is not willing to get rough. When it comes down to it, this luchadora is always ready to fight! There are plenty of impressive fights that demonstrate her power.

Additionally, the stories introduce new characters alongside some familiar faces. One story features the Sons of Justice, the team of famous luchadores, on an occult-themed adventure of their own. Their dynamic personalities shine through alongside their moral ambiguity. Even the antagonists in these stories can be absolutely loveable!
