Spider-Man: Far From Home: Is Mysterio Friend or Foe?

Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, which you really all should have seen by now especially since it’s back in theatres with a new end credit scene!

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the last movie of the MCU’s Phase Three and the first movie to be set post-Endgame. It is clearly one of the most anticipated movies this summer, especially since we know very little about upcoming MCU titles (be it mini-series or movies). From the trailers we know that Spider-Man/Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, will be on a vacation abroad with his classmates when Nick Fury hijacks Peter’s vacation to utilise him. Upon learning the threat of the Elementals, Spidey is introduced to Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhall, a very well-known and good actor), a self-proclaimed hero from another Earth.

Why did I use the self-proclaimed adverb? Because in the comics (and I know people are tired of hearing that phrase), Mysterio is one of Spidey’s enemies. The comic book incarnation of Mysterio is a former Hollywood special effects/illusionist and con-man turned super-villain.

While the trailers and other information led us to believe that this alternative Earth Mysterio is a hero – I think (and I’m sure I’m not the only one) that this is some elaborate con. I can believe that Mysterio is from another Earth, but I also think that Mysterio’s the one behind the Elemental attacks.

Other than the MCU not straying too far from most comics, my main reason for thinking this is that the Elementals are not compelling bad guys, not like Michael Keaton‘s Vulture. The Elementals are just random creatures with no personality and reason for being, except for causing destruction randomly. And here I thought the MCU was past having blah villains.

Another reason why I don’t think the Elementals are the main baddies is screen time of promotional stuff. Mysterio appears a lot more – coming off more of a mentor towards Peter (who just lost another father figure in Tony Stark). Peter’s vulnerability towards searching father figure role models might not turn out well, if Mysterio is the actual big bad.

Of course, I could be wrong. Mysterio might be a good guy. The people at Marvel Studios might want to subvert expectations of critical comic book fans like myself. I’m not saying that it’s a poor take, but if Mysterio is actually a good guy then there has to be someone else behind the Elementals for the reasons I’ve previously pointed out. Is there a secret bad guy? Maybe. Who might it be?

-whispering into the void- Maybe Norman Osborne.

I would love to see the MCU version of the Green Goblin, especially if this will be his origins and Peter doesn’t find out that he was behind the Elementals (but we, the audience, do). But we’ll see, since the movie will be out in a matter of days.

What do you think? Is Mysterio the secret baddie of the movie? Or is he a good guy and might become an Avenger? Let us know what you think in the comments or send us your thoughts on Facebook or Twitter!
