6 Best Superhero Movies to Stream For the First Date on Valentine’s Day

Many superhero movies provide us with interesting and moving relationships. But that doesn’t always mean that those are the ideal movies for a date night. Batman Returns might provide us with the interesting love affair of Selina Kyle-Bruce Wayne. But a movie about a murderous Danny DeVito trying to drag children to the sewers and kill them isn’t romantic. At least, according to our studies. If it is to you and your date, I suggest that and Joker. But, after years of studying what drives lustful neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, here are the six best superhero movies to watch on the first date.

6. Spider-Man (2002)

You always have to love those movies that have 25-year-olds playing high school students. At least for me, at 23 years old, it lets me know that I still may have a second chance to overcome my demons from high school if I try to become an actor. Nevertheless, Sam Raimi‘s first of his trilogy tells the superhuman origins of Peter Parker.

This is a film with a lot of exhilarating action, twists, and heart that will not let either you or your date fall asleep. We also see the beginnings of the first Peter Parker-Mary Jane relationship to hit the cinema. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have solid enough chemistry as the big screen couple before it gets a little tedious with Spiderman having to save Mary Jane over and over again.

5. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

This might be a surprising pick to some. But Days of Future Past combines some of the best elements of the X-Men universe without being too dark like Logan. I’m not saying Logan isn’t a masterpiece of a film, but it isn’t exactly first date material. It’s more on the page of “hey we both love superhero movies, love the X-Men universe, and are comfortable seeing each other cry” material. Which does not qualify as an ideal first date movie. At least, according to our research.

Days of Future Past, on the other hand, carries much of the same themes but is a bit lighter and also does require a lot of context going in. It wouldn’t hurt to have a little, but it’s not the end of the world going in having no idea who these characters are. But what’s the main reason why this movie is on this list? It’s a time travel movie! Everybody loves to debate time travel movies and discuss whether they make sense or not. If you have no idea what to say to your date this is the perfect movie to stir up a natural conversation about the many routes this plot takes us. Also, just a terrific film.

4. Superman II (1980)

Ah, have to have one on this list for the boomers going on their first date. Just kidding, this film can be for first dates of all ages. Even though the Christopher Reeve Superman films, while great, are a little campy. But that doesn’t negate that this is a great movie with a great romance aspect to it with Lois Lane and Clark Kent.

The original Superman could have warranted a spot on this list. But it didn’t because I got dumped after watching it with someone on a first date. Anyways, similar to Days of Future Past there are certain ethical decisions that Lois Lane, as well as Superman, make that warrant discussion after the film. So to make up for the possibility that you two may not have much in common going into the film, this film can make up that difference. Kneel before Zod!

3. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

The movie that put “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Come and Get Your Love” back into the mainstream. At least for uncultured people like me. Guardians of the Galaxy is a great pick for that special someone that may not even be into superhero movies. Because this is more of a space adventure film than a superhero. Still, it fits into this genre.

This is a film that has great visuals, entertaining characters, and a great soundtrack. And you don’t need any context going into it, which might be a key for your date. There’s also a budding love story between Peter Quill and Gamora, who could not be more different. And there’s a chance that might be the case between you and your date. Overall, this is a solid choice for your first date; if it doesn’t get you a second one, it wasn’t meant to be. Why would you want to be around a person that doesn’t like this film?

2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

This is the safest of the picks for a first date movie. Because this is virtually an impossible movie not to at least like. This has a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m convinced that 7% actually enjoyed this film but were told this was the greatest film ever, and it wasn’t to them. So, these people were disappointed because it wasn’t as good as The Godfather and vented on the site. This movie is great. Additionally no context is needed going into the film, a safeguard in case your date is boring and doesn’t like superhero movies.

The visually stunning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse places the extraordinary Miles Morales in a multi-dimensional timeline against almost all of our hero’s foes. But, fortunately, Morales has friends by his side across the various dimensions, while also dealing with boarding school life and family problems. This is a great coming-of-age film that is fun, adventurous, comedic, clever, and beautiful. Hopefully just like the person you’re taking on your first date.

1. Deadpool (2016)

Another list of mine and another first-place prize for Deadpool. This may not be the greatest movie of all time, but there’s no question that it’s the best superhero movie to watch on the first date. It has everything you want in a date movie. Romance, comedy, great action, and a saxophone. Also, everyone likes feeling a little anti-establishment, so some of the movie’s meta-commentary doesn’t hurt.

We also see in this movie a pretty solid first date between Wade Wilson and Vanessa, so here’s a movie that can even give you relationship advice. Also, for anyone into fashion, you get plenty of that throughout the movie as Deadpool continues to update his wardrobe. Lastly, there’s also a great scene that celebrates all your favorite holidays, so if your first date is on a holiday, this is an even better time to watch this movie. Still, you can watch this anytime and enjoy it alongside your date. And if they don’t enjoy this film either you’ve been cat-fished or have a very bad taste in men or women. Take it from me, I’ve done the research.

So what are your favorite first date movies? And why isn’t your list exactly like mine? Sound off in the comments or send us your thoughts on Twitter!
