5 Reasons Why Pacific Rim Will Be The Ultimate Blockbuster of 2013

3. It Is An Original Screenplay

pr j

In an age of reboots, sequels, re-makes and re-imaginings, original films are becoming harder and harder to come by. Everything in existence, it seems, has to be remade or rebooted in some way.

Pacific Rim is based on an original screenplay written by Travis Beacham, who also wrote the screenplay for the Clash of the Titans remake. Don’t let that turn you off, however, as that film suffered from studio interference from day one. Beacham worked hard to create the world of Pacific Rim, even writing the prequel graphic novel to give more insight into the world. And while many have accused Pacific Rim of ripping off the anime franchise Evangelion because of its similar premise of giant monsters fight giant robots, Pacific Rim will more than hold its own in terms of originality.

Undeniably, it is strange that Warner Brothers would greenlight a mega budget film that is not part of a franchise, with no bankable stars and only a name director as its driving force. So, hopefully, if Pacific Rim is successful, it will allow Hollywood to be more open to taking risks.

Look at Pacific Rim as being definitive evidence that Hollywood has not run out of ideas, and that originality can still exist in a world where Hollywood remakes any Scandinavian film that moves. And whilst after its release, Hollywood will still probably be afraid of new ideas, look at Pacific Rim as being hope for the future of originality in Hollywood.

2. It Has A Great Cast

Pacific Rim cast

The Jaegars and monsters may be the stars here, but that does not mean that the human cast are going to be overshadowed. Del Toro regular and Golden Globe winner, Ron Perlman, who the director had to fight the studio for eight years to be allowed to cast him as Hellboy, Golden Globe winner and soon to be A-lister Idris Elba, and rising star Charlie Hunnan, who stars alongside Perlman in Sons of Anarchy, form the core of an extremely talented ensemble.

Oscar nominated Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi, next to be seen alongside Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin, stars in what will hopefully be her American breakthrough, whilst Charlie Day, known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, provides some comic relief as Dr. Newton Geizler. And, geeks rejoice, Burn Gorman, aka Owen Harper in Torchwood and last seen in The Dark Knight Rises, will appear in the film.

After originally being planned as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise, who was going to star in Del Toro’s doomed At The Mountains of Madness project, the film is notable for not really containing any real bankable stars. But who cares? Del Toro has assembled a fantastic and diverse cast of cast of talented actors that will add a much needed human element to the story.

1. It Has An Awesome Premise

Giant monsters vs. giant robots. What’s not to love? Del Toro stated that one of the best things about making this film was that it gave him a chance to be a kid and have fun, and he was right. Wash away the bad taste left in your mouth by Transformers and Battleship, and enjoy some good old fashioned destruction. The robots, know as Jaegars, look awesome, and the monsters, well, let’s just say that Del Toro knows a thing or two when it comes to monsters.
