Missed out on the big comic book news from New York Comic-Con 2018? Here’s a quick recap of all the big news coming out of the jam-packed weekend.
The big “winner” of this weekend had to be DC. Much like SDCC, they came out swinging. Not only did the premiere of Titans get surprisingly good reviews, but fellow DC Universe show Harley Quinn got a first look, with The Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco killing it as the titular Clown Princess of Crime and Lake Bell offering an equally stellar Poison Ivy. Gotham showed off their trailer for the final part of the final season, confirming at their panel the return of Bane and that we will get a full grown Batman by the series finale. The Flash also got a season 5 trailer showing Nora West-Allen’s struggle to get back to her own future.
We also got an extended five-minute long trailer of Aquaman. A much more light-hearted tone from earlier DCEU entries, Aquaman promises big action and great dialogue. The relationship between Mera and Arthur feels like a buddy cop movie if Murtaugh and Riggs got married and ruled an underwater society together (Lethal Weapon 5?). Amber Heard and Jason Momoa both look stunning (I don’t care what anyone says about her hair I love it), and the action scenes look amazing. A long tracking shot following a chase and an all out brawl across Mediterranean rooftops was everything I needed to be sold on this movie, though watching Queen Atlanna kick ass was a major plus. It seems like Aquaman and DCEU fans won’t be disappointed.
Finally for DC, we got casting news in Matt Bomer joining DC Universe’s Doom Patrol as Negative Man and Rosie Perez joining Birds of Prey as Renee Montoya.
For Marvel, the showing was much more relaxed, but still incredibly impressive. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse got a new trailer, showing off the breathtaking art style and hilarious writing. We get to see all of the Spiders in all their glory, including our lead Miles Morales voiced by Shameik Moore, Peter Parker voiced by Jake Johnson, Gwen Stacy voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, Pini Parker voiced by Kimiko Glenn, Spider-Man Noir voiced Nicolas-freaking-Cage, and Spider-Ham voiced by the always hilarious John Mulaney. This movie, combined with the recently release of Spider-Man for the PS4 is enough to make any Spider-fan a very happy spider-camper.
Alongside a look into their gritty Sabrina The Teenage Witch reboot, Netflix revealed a trailer for the season 3 of Daredevil. Finally, we’re given an MCU Bullseye, now a much more hardcore and deadly Daredevil than Matt ever was. Fisk is also back, possibly pulling Bullseye’s strings? Who knows but this season is bound to be action packed.
And finally, in a gift from hell, we got a first look at Stranger Things’ David Harbour as Hellboy, looking like he traded in Dad Bod for Jacked Bod, and I am here for it.
